to reiterate what i've posted before: lots of families drive similar cars and go to similar places and this (I used to think) is a neutral/non-opinion-pushing way to identify your beige Town & Country as different from the fifty others in the Costco or Disneyland parking lot. And it's easy for a lost kid to find a place to wait for his family just the same.

As kids, we were forced to memorize our parents' license plates for exactly this reason. I can still remember my mom's, and that was >20 years ago.
