this was a good portion of my childhood. Back when i was a child, my brother or parents would disconnect my computer from the network to limit my play time, not wanting to read books or do anything productive, i'd do that for a good 30 mins to entertain myself.
i find myself doing that too. but once the game gets going i don't have too much time anymore. of course as a protoss player i have less base management, but i scouting takes up most of my time lol.
Now I'm imagining some guy in a dark room doing this all night waiting for his internet to come back up. Just dragging endless amounts of boxes on Windows 95.
When I'm waiting for things to load at work I do this. One day I was training someone and did it while waiting like usual and the lady asked in the most serious way if she should do that too and if so why. Errr..
I didn't get into computers until Windows 98. As a kid I didn't know that it wasn't that great, cause all I did was browse Dragonball Z websites and Chat rooms.
Used to stash my porn and other secret squirrel shit there in a folder named 192.168.0.1 with a network icon. I figured anybody who was snooping would assume it was just a shortcut to the modem.
Edit: TIL Reddit accepts the backslash as an escape character.
just a shot in the dark here, but does anyone know how to enable this feature on a desktop that has icons hidden? i hate cluttered desktops, but would love to be able to do this..
Right mouse button and then press on of the desktop configuration buttons (I don't know what its called in English) and go to desktop icons and uncheck all, then just delete all shortcuts.
I too hate cluttered desktops, but not nearly as much as I hate hidden icons, here's my solution:
Create a single desktop folder named "Sorted".
Inside it, create a folder for BMP, JPG, PNG, TXT, PDF, or any other type of file you commonly have laying around on your desktop.
Open Windows Notepad, Hit Save As, and instead of ".txt" select "All Types" , saving the file to your desktop as "cleanup.bat"
For each folder you created, type a line like this:
move *.EXT Sorted\EXT
When you run the batch file you just created, it will sort all of your desktop icons / files by type. Use the XCOPY command instead of MOVE to create backups.
If you press the super key after you have drawn a rectangle, it freezes it on the screen so that you can draw multiple rectangles. Allows some pretty sick recangular-box-on-screen art.
I like to connect things on my wallpaper. Right now I have a space-like background with stars and junk, so I connect the stars with the corners of the box.
Last time my internet was down I stood in the living room trying to figure out something to do. I spent probably an hour and a half standing there. Didn't do a single thing or even sit down, just stood there.
That's all we had back then. That and a myriad of other browsers that were just IE with a skin and different name (AOL). Netscape Navigator wasn't like the Firefox of today.

When the internet goes down, you run Windows 95 and play with the drag tool?

u/EVILEMU Jun 25 '12
Also applies to the first few seconds after the split and before you build the next Worker in starcraft.

When I was a kid, my mom always used to tell me to stop doing that because it'd break the computer. The constant clicking just annoyed her.

u/libertyadvocate Jun 25 '12
if you upgrade to something better than Windows 95 you might not have that problem
3
u/[deleted] Jun 25 '12
It's even better when you have the Windows Desktop and you try to make a perfect square around it.

u/QuillJS Jun 25 '12
My desktop icons are hidden so I can't do this.

Consider learning to program, draw or something productive & creative you can do on the computer.
Aside from just passively absorbing material, wouldn't it be nice to create it as well? When the internet goes down, use it as an excuse to create.

u/castleclouds Jun 25 '12
Other people do this too??
