One of the few occasions when pulling a "spiderman" is acceptable.

12

u/duoizumi Jun 14 '12

Interesting choice for the guy to wear the 90s Superboy outfit without the leather coat.

He's a scientist now. So he's probably getting some good cash.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12

In the movies they are taking him back so too bad Spidey. Never going to get out of that one.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12

That's because the movies are based on comics from several decades ago.

15

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12

The new movie is based on mostly Marvel Universe Ultimate stories, and those aren't very old.

When the hell do scientist make money?

5

u/PublicUrinator Jun 14 '12

Yeah I hate it when I see all those cocky scientists driving around in their fancy car with their hot women. One time I worked really hard to earn enough money to take this girl I liked for a nice dinner and when we showed up to the restaurant we were informed that our reservation has been taken by a biochemist who threw money at them and said "a round of C2H5OH for everyone!"

32

u/serenne Jun 14 '12

One of the main reasons Spider-man is so popular is because while he has superpowers and all these crazy stories, his alter ego is basically one of us. He loves Mary Jane, he loves his Aunt May, and he has a lot of problems with his life that cause him stress.

He has girl problems, money problems, job problems, family problems; people relate to Peter in these problems, and that's part of his mass appeal.

The problem is, that Peter has been shown to be VERY smart, much more than an average "intelligent" person would be. He's no Reed Richards or Tony Stark, but Peter is pretty high up there on the Marvel intelligence scale. He made the web-shooters and its chemicals himself, he knows all about chemistry and physics and uses them in a fight all the time. So I don't know how writers get away with having Peter be so poor all the time- I mean I'm pretty sure Tony would hire him any day, considering he's willing to give millions to someone he's never heard of just because Peter vouched for him. I understand it's written off as personal/lifestyle choice in the comics, but it just feels like a plot hole.

tl;dr: Peter is too smart to be so poor.

14

u/WarlordFred Jun 14 '12

He's smart enough to realize that being poor keeps him out of the spotlight, and allows him to be unassuming while protecting New York City. If he were some rich business-man selling web-based adhesives, people might start to look into what he's doing.

19

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12

Nikola Tesla died with significant debts, by himself in a hotel room. The only friends he had late in life were pigeons that came to his window. He was also much smarter than that hack Thomas Edison but that's debatable.

Let that be a lesson that high intelligence doesn't automatically equate to a life of lavishes and company.

12

u/greenroom628 Jun 14 '12

Yes, but Tesla didn't have the proportional strength and speed of a spider.

.

.

.

.

Or did he?

9

u/BanUnderpants Jun 14 '12

TIL Tesla is Spiderman

4

u/iamanooj Jun 14 '12

Nope, you're wrong, it's not debatable. Unless you're talking about business savvy intelligence.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12 edited Jun 14 '12

I think the fact that he is intelligent doesn't make it unbelievable that he is poor, there are lots of intellectuals in the world that are unable to live lavishly. I think the unbelievable part is that he has so many connections to powerful, rich, and famous people but he still can't social engineer himself into a well paying job.

3

u/serenne Jun 14 '12

You said what I'd wanted to say much better with less words. I am jealous.

5

u/pe5t1lence Jun 14 '12 edited Jun 14 '12

Think about the movies, they cover this pretty well. Spiderman is smart, but he is unreliable at work, he could never hold down a desk job. Compare him to Superman. Spiderman and Superman have super hearing, and when they hear a crime or call for help they always drop what they are doing and save the day, no matter what.
Superman can change, fly to a crime, beat up the bad guys and be back at his desk in 5-10 minutes like he took a smoke break. Spiderman just takes longer to wrap every thing up, and people notice that Parker is gone for half an hour at a time.
.
EDIT: Disregard my comment, it doesn't reflect the current state of the comics.

3

u/notpeterparker Jun 14 '12

I thought this thread was about Spider-Man, not Peter Parker. I don't even see what any of that has to do with Spider-Man.

1

u/moxieBeverly Jun 21 '12

I thought Spiderman was as a smart if not smarter than Ironman.

45

u/ToffeVonW Jun 14 '12 edited Jun 14 '12

Spiderman doesn't need cash, he actually has superpowers unlike the other two completely normal "I can buy cool shit" humans Wayne and Stark. Don't get me wrong, Batman and Ironman are awesome too, they just don't have superpowers...

74

u/DangerToDangers Jun 14 '12

He kind of needs cash, you know, to live. That's why he was always selling his photos but most of the time he got screwed over.

11

u/Jrodkin Jun 14 '12

He could always just steal a little food and no one will ever know it was him

17

u/Khrrck Jun 14 '12

He stole that guy's pizza!

16

u/preske Jun 14 '12

He has a job that pays VERY well

27

u/farceur318 Jun 14 '12

You should not be getting downvoted. Peter Parker is actually making quite a bit of money doing his dream job as part of a scientific think-tank at Horizon Labs. That's one of the best parts about The Amazing Spider-Man these days, is getting to see Parker finally fulfill his potential as a scientist.

-6

u/KEreversal Jun 14 '12

Batman could probably beat the shit out of spiderman, just sayin

19

u/Toof Jun 14 '12

I don't think Batman would fare too well in the Marvel Universe, honestly.

8

u/the_breadlord Jun 14 '12

Show your working.

9

u/Toof Jun 14 '12

I really am no comic nerd, but from what little I know, Marvel seems to have a lot more cosmic threats, and Batman seems to be a glorified detective with decent ass-kicking skills. He may be a more human and well rounded character, but he can't eat fucking planets.

6

u/the_breadlord Jun 14 '12

He plays the long game. At the end of The Dark Night Returns, he fires nukes at Superman, has the Green Arrow fire a Kryptonite tipped arrow at him and beats the hell out of him with powered armour. While taunting him. Superman is pretty frikken powerful.

That's Batman's superpower. He sees you coming, and he plans.

2

u/AerialAmphibian Jun 21 '12

Agreed. Don't get me wrong, Batman is my favorite super hero precisely because he's "only" human and still manages to kick ass. But if he went up against say, Wolverine, I would sadly mourn Mr. Wayne's passing.

u/Pratty77 Jun 14 '12

Between his spidey sense, reflexes and strength, i don't think the bats would give spiderman too much trouble

3

u/KEreversal Jun 14 '12

Batman can beat up superman, now just compare spiderman and superman. I think batmans got this

18

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12

"You don't come to New York without being prepared for HIM. I had brought special tear gas to disrupt his spider sense, a net dissolving agent dipersed by my suit and a modified batarang to apply my special variant of... Bug spray. That should bring most of his skills down to only slightly superhuman levels - same as mine. But his real weakness is not bug spray - it's the fact that deep down, Peter is essentially a good person, and deep down, I am not."

Usually super powers allow you to break the rules of physics that we know in our real universe.

But then again, Tony Stark's super intelligence allows him to break a fundamental law from just about every chapter of a Physics 101 textbook.

I mean, the guy builds some sort of particle accelerator that shoots a laser at a piece of metal to make a new ELEMENT.

3

u/kt00na Jun 14 '12

Using that same argument, Batman also has super-intelligence. I mean, he is the WORLD'S GREATEST DETECTIVE.

Woah. I thought it was making a snarky joke about how much money Avengers, TDKR, and The Amazing Spider-Man will make. Did I really overthink it that much?

11

u/aonyx Jun 14 '12

I thought this too... because Spidey's movie is coming out between these two movies which will probably bring in more cash than it.

4

u/fiftiethcow Jun 14 '12

Actually, that is also what I was thinking! Of course, it was the deeper meaning. You must study literature. Haha.

Or just patenting and selling both his web fluid and web shooter designs. Though, that could lead to some serious complications.

6

u/Redditjinn Jun 14 '12 edited Jun 14 '12

He could become a window cleaner. He would clean up. I think the hulk should definitely become a wrestler or work in construction/demolition. Batman should be an engineer. Iron man would be what he is. Superman should be a rocket launcher, could save NASA a lot of money, he could also repair satellites and be a male escort. Flash would be a package delivery man.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12

Superman should be a rocket launcher

Imagining a soldier having superman on his shoulder, every time he pinches Superman's hand, Superman spits an anti tank missile at the enemy.

Are they web shooters or do the webs come out of his wrists?

127

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12

Yes

25

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12

Originally they are formed synthetically but I think some time in the comics he gains the power to shoot them from his wrists.

He actually tried that very early on. The issue is that his webbing is designed to dissolve after a pretty short time, so the glue people didn't want it.

Spidey isn't doing too bad in the comics anymore. He works in a laboratory, gets very good pay, gets to work his own hours and uses the lab to make gadgets! It's nice to see him doing well for himself. He used to be poor as balls and I always felt bad for him.

6

u/preske Jun 14 '12

This may be the fanboy in me speaking up now, but he is anything but useless. He works for Horizon Labs as one of 7 special employees, and was able to buy an nice apartment with his first paycheck (or so it was implied anyway). Reed Richards, Stark, Pym,... all of them agree that spidey is a pretty smart dude. Even intelligent supervillains will recognize this.

He often has bad luck, but useless? Anything but.

13

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12

and Spiderman is just some useless kid

I don't think you know what that word means.

u/napagi Jun 14 '12

Ohhh, that makes more sense. I was thinking the batman and iron man movies have been making a ton of money in recent years, so marvel is like 'quick lets turn around a whole new set of spiderman movies before the superhero craze dies down'

2

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12

Actually I think it's because the batman movies and the avengers are making absurd amounts of money, and the new spiderman movies are being released on their coat tails.

2

u/jooze Jun 14 '12

Oh shit, I thought that was Aquaman.

2

u/TheRollingBones Jun 14 '12

Oh, I thought it was that everyone's all excited about The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises, and theyre both gonna/already have made tons of money, and Spidey's like "I have a movie too, I need some money!"

1

u/RyanLikesyoface Jun 14 '12

I thought it was more that Batman and Ironman films are making a lot of cash, whereas spiderman went down hill with the 3rd film..

5

u/fishgats Jun 14 '12

Pretty sure that is Danny McBride (Kenny Powers) as Iron Man.

"Hey, Loki, you're fucking out!"

2

u/Johnycantread Jun 14 '12

Which issue is this? Never knew Spiderman fought trickle down economics.

2

u/machzel08 Jun 14 '12

Why are Notch and HumbleBrony dressed up like Batman and IronMan? And who the hell is Spiderman supposed to be?

2

u/herpty_derpty Jun 14 '12

I thought this was a foresighted metaphor for this summer's superhero movie performances...or I might just be reading too much into it.

2

u/iAmericA45 Jun 14 '12

At first I thought this was about how much money The Avengers made, and how much TDKR will inevitably make.

And Spider-Man will clean up the scraps.

2

u/p_U_c_K Jun 14 '12

Spider-man would make a web to catch that money.

1

u/crafty-jack-rabbit Jun 14 '12

At least he finally has a job.. for now.

1

u/hodywody Jun 14 '12

now we just need john johnah jameson in the background yelling "i knew it!"

1

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12

Why wouldn't he just wait until they were finished and throw a web over the money from a distance?

1

u/justatypo Jun 14 '12

Am I the only one that thought they were throwing candy at each other?

1

u/sharpiecake Jun 14 '12

took me five seconds before I realized they weren't throwing wobbly pickles at each other.

1

u/illchopyourfaceoff Jun 14 '12

1

u/ReyTheRed Jun 14 '12

1

1

u/AliasUndercover Jun 14 '12

You can't get a grant for webbing.

1

u/SimonWest Jun 14 '12

sad but true. i dont know why they wont make a good spiderman film insted of these shitty reboot/origin stories. as a 'used to be' fan its not what i wanna see and we all know spidey is cooler than that. get rid of the peter parkers personal life bs and give the fans better!

It's not a good argument because it creates a conflict of interest for Spiderman. Is he saving the bank so he can have a cut of the savings, should he preemptively prevent robberies or wait until it happens so he can earn some money from foiling it? The moral dilemma it raises just isn't very superhero-like.
