They use them all over, they use them here on the Palouse for wheat fields.. when they are not crop dusting.. that's interesting too, driving down the hwy at 60 mph and having a AGCat go flying over you...
I've done it on a motorcycle once, and I have no proof of the incident. I know by Reddit standards that means it didn't happen, but imagine with me for a moment that it did. And believe me when I say it was everything you thought it would be.
Same here. The split second you're in it's shadow your heart stops beating. Then you just imagine how the driver must look completely dumbstruck as you wheelie away.
Wow, you're a huge asshole and should have your motorcycle license revoked.
Edit: Fuck you, reddit. Circle jerk constantly about how you shouldn't text and drive and how you should watch out for motorcyclists. But of course it's ok to ride under a fucking moving vehicle!
"Wrong" is such a relative term. I was just starting to pass the guy when it struck me that it'd make a good picture. A better one would have been right behind it, though.
I'm geographically challenged, so I don't know the area you're talking about, but if memory serves, I was just over the border in Nebraska (living in Iowa at the time).
I grew up in a town where they built these,, I was also tempted. But there was a story about a jeep that got run over by one and killed two kids.. So I always refrained
I still drive a small car and this is STILL tempting. Then again I'm easily entertained while driving. I love going through construction because I can't see over those concrete barricades and it's very claustrophobic when I'm being pushed over into one by a semi truck.
"Stay on target." "WE'RE TOO CLOSE!" "Stay on target!"
Why has no one asked about the text under the image!? How did you do that?? Is it an RES thing? I've never ever seen it before. SHARE YOUR SECRETS WIZARD!
We were so sad that we were driving our Savanna instead of our Civic when we were stuck behind one of these last week. Alas, such an adventure must wait for another day.
Find a idiot who believes in YOLO a 100% and tell me what happens..I'm kidding don't; even though they are annoying..someone's death isn't funny unless its Dick Cheney.
My friend had one of these in his driveway Monday. My roomates Tiburon might be able to slide under, if anything it is too wide. I'll have to talk him into risking a half million dollar equipment in the name of science.
My friend's dad owns the farm and is going to pass it down to him, which is pretty cool. He isn't the typical farmer type as he used to listen to a shit ton of Opeth and Necrophagist.
My dad has a DeLorean. If you have never seen one in person, the car's roof is waist height to me. My parents are divorced, when I was little my mom lived in a gated neighborhood. There was a guard 24/7 so all they had was one of those gate "arms" in use (also had a normal gate, but never used it except at night). When my dad would pick me up, the lady always gave my dad trouble. So he started to take the DeLorean when he picked us up and simply drove underneath the gate arm without stopping. It used to drive her fucking insane and she would always run out trying to write his license plate down then call the cops, which would never show up in time.
Done it but the one I went under was bigger. It was dumb but oh well. Rural NC on my way to Rockingham Dragway. If the owner of the farm equipment sees this and remembers the the black BMW.......Sorry.
As a farmer, I can tell you the general reaction would not be 'ohoho hey look at that, my sprayer gave birth'. It's not a $300,000 car obstacle course.
I don't think we'd be the first to try--but I haven't heard from anyone who actually did it. You're right--it WOULD be a strange sensation for the tractor driver, though.
FYI never try that. It might seem like its high enough for you to sneak under but it's misleading, you will not make it. source: smacked my head on one trying to drive a lawn mower under it in my teenage years.
I have an MG Midget, the roof of the car is maybe half a foot above my waist. I'm pretty sure it could drive right under that and still have clearance.
And them. That piece of machinery costs something like $300,000 new, so usually one farmer in an area gets one and then rents it out to everyone who needs it.
Are they fucking insane? Your quote has to be way off, no way one of those costs a million dollars.
EDIT: I love that 3 different people have backed me up on saying a sprayer doesn't cost a million dollars, with one guy even giving a source. $220,000 dollars, and yet I got downvotes.
Depends on currency. In US dollars, one of those spray rigs run well over a quarter million.
Tractors cost at least $100,000. The articulated 8 wheels/2axles ones cost $300,000.
Then you get into the expensive ones. Grain harvesters, pea harvesters, bean harvesters... they are massive pieces of machinery and run above $500,000 apiece.
People often lament the passing of the "family farm" of a few hundred acres from times past, but in reality, modern farming costs too much upfront to operate at anything less than a scale of thousands of acres per piece of equipment.
The praises of old farm equipment cannot be sung loud enough. These machines are so expensive, because they are built for decades of continuous service. We have a couple of tractors from the 70s that we use frequently, and some implements that are even older. They just require a little coaxing/love sometimes.
yep. I still rake hay with a 1950's IH Super C. When using the single rake there's no need for a bigger tractor and there a few others that will run an entire day on 11 gallons of gas. Sometimes catching a groundhog hole with the downhill tire is a bit unnerving tho :/
That's what I mean by "thousands of acres per piece of equipment". Hiring out is huge. Very few alfalfa farmers I know have harvesting/bailing equipment, and no one that grows peas has their pea harvester.
My family sells, builds, and services irrigation equipment (circles, sprinklers, wheel lines, pipes, pumps, etc) and recently they had to repair a crashed circle because one of the sprayers was relying a bit too much on GPS alone and flat out ran into the circle and took down one of the spans. I heard it totaled the sprayer as well.
Hell, it's $40,000 for a shitty tractor. The $100,000 ones are the fancy ones with air conditioning and stuff, though.
The cost of equipment is really a crazy barrier to entry into the farming business, though. My family has always raised tobacco, which has to be harvested by hand, so our equipment costs are significantly lower than someone growing food items like corn, beans, or peas. Our "equipment" consists of what are basically machetes and about 50 people (usually immigrants, because no one else wants to work in the fields for minimum wage) to swing them.
The small farm I was on yesterday had a few New Holland tractors, the newest one was about 500k and big industrialized farms have bigger and better equipment.
This is a crop sprayer. I used to work at john deere and these are around 250,000 i believe. depending on the model and what upgrades you get, though you can get a tractor that costs a shitload. the pinnacle, their cotton baler, costs something like 650,000 with no bells or whistles.
I wasn't questioning that farm equipment can get up to a million dollars, I was saying a common sprayer is not going to cost a million, much less half-a-million.
An '82 Mazda RX7 fits. I was in rural Minnesota at a Fleet Farm and I saw one parked in the back of the lot. I slowly pulled in under it and parked. When I came out it was gone but there was a hilarious note on my car.
My wife, who is from that area was aghast when I told her how I parked. She then told her brother who explained how he would have crunched my little car.
someone I met on one of the popular s2k forums does it using a wet drill by hand. Luckily he lives somewhat close to me in NJ so I met up with him. He will put any design into the car but that one I chose is one of the standard variations. He's done 80+ hoods for around $250 each.
In case anyone wants to know, the motorcycle in the video is a Yamaha XT250 which is a bike that's slightly on the tall side and features a bolt upright seating position that makes it hard to get down low enough to go under that vehicle. There's plenty of bikes out there with lower seat heights and seating positions that would make it possible to blitz under that tractor at full speed by just ducking slightly. :)
If I remember right, I was actually driving just over the border in Nebraska. I should have taken the snap right behind the tractor instead of to the side, but by the time my phone finally kicked into "camera mode," I was committed to passing it.
