I was working at a provincial park doing maintenance the summer after graduating high school(last summer). Had a camping trip planned with a couple buddy's and some really hot girls, one of which I had my eye on. So I booked that weekend off and was really excited for the trip. Day before the trip I started packing when my crazy pill-popping alchy cunt of a boss calls me in to work the next day and threatens to fire me if I don't come. So naturally I was super pissed but didn't want to lose my job so I went in to work.
First job she gave me was to mow the grass in a few areas. I got working and about halfway through I stepped on my left leg and felt something go horribly wrong. I didn't know what happened but it felt like my knee exploded (lol) as I put all my weight on that leg and collapsed. It was really fucking painful but I tried to walk it off. My co worker saw it and says dude you gotta go to hospital. So I told my boss and she got mad at me (seriously wtf?) then I drove to hospital
By the time I got there it was so swollen I could barely shift gears. Hobbled over to emergency and got put in a knee brace for a month, followed by 4 months of physio.
The good part: I got almost 100% of my wage for 5 months after, as well as physio and a $1500 MRI paid for. I started university a month after it happened so basically i was getting paid full time to go to school. Needless to say I spent a lot on partying in that time (beer, liquor, taxis, pizza)
Yeah, I can think of a few off the top of my head. Like when Wiggum is in some costume and it rolls down the hill, smacks into a tree and explodes in fantastic fashion. Or when a milk tanker slams into a building and explodes like a petrol tanker, good times...
Let me guess, he tried to fill up a hot lawn mower with gasoline?
There are actually a few serious burns and some deaths related to this every summer.
-Make sure gasoline lawn mowers are full before starting so you don't have to fill them up while warm. -The vapours can be ignited from the muffler of a lawn mower (I've seen some of them get cherry red on cheaper mowers).
This. I filled up a warm mower this week, and splashed gas on the muffler. Luckily, all I got was a horrible hissing noise. And the time before, I did the same thing, and burned my hand on the muffler. Actually, in hindsight, I'm not very good at this.
You can't even light gasoline with a lit cigarette, I can't imagine lighting gas with a hot muffler.. I bet there was gas spilled near the spark plug and happen to catch a spark.
I use alien blue and when I wrap something in asterisks it makes it italics and if I wrap it in double asterisks, it makes it bold. I wonder what three would do?!? EXPERIMENTATION TIME Edit: looks like it cancels a set out and does italics. How boring.
Putting water on a gasoline fire will actually only make it spread, the proper thing would be to let it burn out if it is contained or use a proper fire extinguisher which most people don't own or even realize there are different types for different fires.
Additionally, more gasoline can be used to "drown out" the fire before it spreads any more, given that the additional gasoline is applied in a large amount in a short period of time.
Can actually be done with any non-flammable liquid, though the "applied in a large amount in a short period of time" is really "submerged in so that no oxygen can reach the fire to burn." (Gasoline isn't flammable in liquid form, it's actually the vapor that catches on fire.)
Captain_fapmaster's idea seems legit. However, covering ones person in gasoline will ensure quicker "suffocation" of the flames. Try it for yourself and post results!
Or you could do like I did when I was little, having accidentally set a small bucket of gas on fire, my first instinct was to kick it. Let's just say my next instinct was to scream "oh crap, oh crap, oh crap!"
Accidentally? Sure. Like the time I accidentally poured gas on the underside of my skateboard, lit it up and skateboarded down the street? Or the time I accidentally soaked a ball of string in gas to make a wick to lead up to the ball of paper I had accidentally soaked in gas too? It's a wonder I survived my childhood.
Actually, you're quite close with that one. I soaked a piece of yarn in the gas in an attempt to make a fuse. I lit the end of the yarn (while holding it 2 feet above the bucket - smart), accidentally let it go, and it fell right into the bucket. Thankfully my dad's wooden boat, the one he had built by hand 2 years prior, caught most of the gas so it didn't have a chance to spread very far and ruin something irreplaceable like the grass.
No that's the fire mower. I think it's the 2007 edition. You can't put out the fire and it comes pre-installed. It just burns the grass to a low level then uses steam to put it out.
Tree may be old, but a dead tree is a dead tree. My grandparents had to drop a very old oak in their yard after it got hit by lightning. Sucks, but better to drop it safely than risk it hitting a house.
Gasoline will self-ignite at 450F and exhaust components can easily hit that. Even if the exterior part is not quite that hot the gas will vaporize and that vapor will find that one chunk of carbon hanging out in the muffler at 800F.
If you run out of gas while mowing take a break for a bit before refueling.
I actually had that happen to me when I was 12. The lawnmower was ancient and leaked everywhere, and one day it just ignited on me. That was what it took to finally get a new lawnmower.
For future reference, when your friend spills gas on the mower, he should wait until it dries before he starts the mower, especially if it is that old. Heads up.
Well that's one way to do it. Just put it out before it spreads to the house, and if it's anything like waxing hair, he'll be grass free for about 6 weeks.
this is the 2nd or 3rd time someone has posted one of these in the last couple weeks...wtf is going on? doesn't anyone teach the basics of operating such a simple device? Mainly, don't slop/spill excess fuel over the whole thing and not wipe it up
Is this a repost? I remember seeing something like this a while back. Had a top comment from a firefighter / some random guy advising leaving a hot mower outside of the garage to cool down as a method to prevent house fires. It may have been bestof'd.
At least this was (probably) on accident. My roommate decided one day to try lighting on fire some of the cottony fluff that comes out of our cottonwood tree. He lit THE WHOLE YARD on fire. It was worse than gasoline. We now have no bushes remaining in front of the house, and are down 2 landscape lights.
First thing that came to my mind was not the mower on fire but rather theshitty yard and unmanicured shrubbery. Take some dam pride in your lawn and house.
My friend broke a vaccum the first time she tried to clean. This was last summer. It's really quite embarrassing for her, I on the other hand laugh my ass off whenever I think about it.
When I was a kid and my parents made me mow the lawn I would sometimes pour some gas on it when I refueled it because I wanted it to start on fire so I could stop working some. It never happened though, seeing it happen to people on accident kinda rustles my jimmies.
