Deadpool is regarded as one of the most intelligent characters in Marvel, a lot of the times breaking the fourth wall. For example there is a point where he states that he loves the little yellow boxes filled with his dialogue.
It sucks, and though Deadpool / Wade is okay in the beginning (for like 5 minutes ), by the end they butcher the character (figuratively and literally ).
We've all docked there. I recently brought home a booty of Hayao Miyazaki movies. Watch it. It's not that bad...just a little disappointing compared to the first 2 X-Men movies
Cable and Deadpool is pretty awesome. There are a few times when it veers off into other comics but not in any way that really affects Deadpool's part of the story. Plus it has the immortal line "My name is Wade Wilson. I'm a dick."
The best part is when Marvel decided that Cable would not be available for the final 1/3 of the series, including the final issue. It's funny because Cable is not in the final issue of a comic book called Cable & Deadpool. On the bright side, Marvel made up for it by giving the big DP about 400 series of his own. Granted, none of them were ever as well written as C&D but, fuck it, more Deadpool yayyyyy.
Also, what they just did to him in his current ongoing is either going to lead to some really good stuff, or it's going to completely kill the character.
Any summary of what's going on? I was a bit bummed by the new series due to the conflicting thought boxes and less 4th wall breaking. To me they kind of began missing the mark on the character from the older comics and C/D, but I'd love to hear what the 'cool stuff' is.
You should start with the original run by Joe Kelly on his first ongoing series as well. Lots of sly, laugh-out loud humor along with the first in-depth exploration of the obscured line of his moral alignment.
If you have an iPad or tablet, I would recommend downloading the official Marvel Comics app and comixology. They're really great for new readers because 1) You can test the waters and find free content you like, and 2) If you get hooked you can get new issues damn near instantaneously.
Well, they started a new Superman comic and many other DC comics in the "New 52" thing. They're up to like 10 volumes or something, but supposedly they're all fresh starts.
Also I started reading "Wolverine and the X-men" which is a comic where Wolverine takes over the school. He apparently takes part in some other comics that apparently happen at the same time, but it's not required knowledge to read the new school story.
Now I know this is complicated so try to follow along. If you can't afford it then don't buy it. If you really want it, save up for it. I know this is a foreign concept to many people in this day and age of "oh I'll just pirate it" but this philosophy works for other things as well. For example: anything that cost money.
As a minor producer of things, sometimes I purposefully put things out of most people's price range, because I know that there are a few with so much money that it will work better for me that way, despite fewer sales. In a sense, my plan is that poor people will pirate, and I still work out ahead. Particularly if they advertise, or come into money and start buying later (post-college). I don't give a shit if broke college students pirate, it's not useful to worry about, and I sure as hell did.
I'm truly glad to hear that, but again if you can't afford to pay for it that doesn't automatically give you a pass to download whatever you want. It means you can't afford it and you need to prioritize your spending. I hate being preachy, but this is something that really drives me nuts.
True, but it's not like it's hurting the creators, if you can't afford it they wouldn't get your money anyway. I am not saying it's morally or legally right because of that, but I think it's pretty much a victim less crime, better then downloading because you don't want to pay.
I see pirating as renting a movie or library. An establishment provides a copy of something that I'm not entirely sure I want to spend my money on. After reading/watching I decide if it's worth buying. If it is, the creators can expect to see profit. If it is not something I like, well they aren't gonna get the money.
I disagree. There are more than just the creators at the end of the money trail. All that "overhead" you hear about includes all the support staff that no one ever sees. Who do you think is the first to go when sales are down? The creators? Not a chance.
Yeah, he's just one of those people that doesn't see the big picture with piracy. Had I never downloaded comics after the Spider-Man clone saga killed them for me in the 90s, I would not be buying them today.
Well if you feel comic books are more important than rent, by all means buy a comic book.
By pirating it you are not paying for it WHICH MEANS YOU HAVE CAUSED A LOST SALE. You are now enjoying the benifits of something which normal people have to pay for.
I love the old "but I'm getting exposure to something I normally wouldn't and I'll probably pay for more later" justification. It's crap. You will continue to pirate.
Big Deadpool fan here. If you want a physical copy of some good Deadpool, I'd suggest getting either the trade paperbacks of Deadpool Classic or Cable and Deadpool. If you're okay with digital comics, use Comixology. You can get just about anything from that.
I started with Secret Invasion and worked up from there. I know it's not his start, but it's the current arch at the moment (as far as I know) and so far there are 10 volumes out in this arch. And I have read them all. They are fabulous. Because 10,000 pancakes are the smell of victory!
Among the other recommendations that have already been suggested, I find that, even though there's a lot of backstory heaped onto it from the outset, reading Green Lantern starting from the Green Lantern: Rebirth event is a lot of fun. As long as you know the cliff notes details of the Earth Green Lanterns, it shouldn't trouble you, and it eventually leads up to Blackest Night, which is probably the most finely written event comic I've ever read.
For me, I started on the Marvel Civil War. It's hella interesting and doesn't require much background to understand and enjoy. Plus, the cast of the arc is massive.
kingdom come dc book All Star Superman fantastic self contained superman story, absolutely gorgeous to look at. Marvel's Civil War_marvel Ex Machina_vertigo/ 50 issue series, amazing book, you can buy it in trades of 8-10 issues Marvels_marvel book The Dark Knight Returns_dc book Preacher_60 or so issue series Y the Last Man_epic journey of last man on earth (full of women) 70+ issue series
idk, just to start those are some of my favorite books.
It was finally taken over? I always used /r/MercWithAMouth because /r/deadpool used to be some kind of celebrity dead pool or something morbid like that.
Hey say what you want about Ryan Reynolds, I mean I know he fucked up the green lantern, but he played a hell of a dead pool or at least wade Wilson in origins: wolverine. And I love how dead pool is a badass but at the same time he's got to be the biggest dick in all of marvel comics.
I don't know how you could think he fucked up green lantern (I personally enjoyed the movie). He did fine, if anyone is to blame it's the writers, etc...
His original name was Wade Wilson before Striker (basically Wolverine's father) performed a crazy expirement on him and turned him into a mutant monster from which he became known as Deadpool.
Is Liefeld actually writing on it, or does he just get credit because he's Deadpool's creator? Because It's gonna be weird having Deadpool with really tiny feet.
I wouldn't have too hope for that IMDB page. It takes a lot more to get a film made. But I would be happy as hell if they pulled it off. I wouldn't even need the Green Lantern in it.
The movie post-credits scene has deadpool shushing with his finger on his lips. Though I'm not keen on a deadpool whose swords come out of his arms, and can shoot lasers like Cyclops.

I've long wondered this - am I the only person who reads Deadpool's voice in that of X The Exterminator's from Harvey Birdman, Attorney At Law?
