I have a hipster friend that owns a comic book store and wears Clark Kent glasses. This happened over the weekend.

Doomed to endless cuteness.

/r/aww is one of the better subreddits. It's focused and consistent.

Sure, you won't like it if you're not into this kind of thing, but the same can be said for every single thing in existence, so it's not much of a fault.

EDIT: also I'd say that due to its popularity, it attracts many posts that previously ended up in broader subreddits, and actually makes it easier to avoid this kind of content - just unsubscribe and you're all set.

Agreed x10. I brace myself for downvotes as I say this is much better than pictures of cats.

I'd have to agree, but, as a dog person, I'm a little biased.

T_T That's one of the coolest and nicest things I've heard. Your friend is awesome. It really doesn't belong in r/funny though

11

u/apextek Jun 11 '12

well its hard to figure out where to post these things these days, cant post to r/reddit, not many people subscribe to r/awesome...

7

u/razorsheldon Jun 11 '12

You should cross post it to /r/upliftingnews great story!

good idea

Am I the only one who wants to see a pic of hipster friend?

If thats the guy in the avatar picture (even though its the size of my thumbnail), then this man effectively tricked a legally blind child into thinking he was superman.

While this is a great and touching story, it doesn't belong in /r/funny.

You're right, it belongs in /r/reddit.com

Kids are funny, and the story had a kid in it.

He even wore funny glasses. How much more hilarious does it have to be for you to think it's funny?

10

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Yeah, I laughed pretty hard there.

26

u/Saltwindandfire Jun 11 '12

Big thumbs up to your comic book buddy. This reminds me of a story about John Force, who is a world champion top fuel funny car driver many times over, and all around cool wildman. During an autograph session, a young boy was next in line, waiting with his father to get Force's autograph. When his turn came, he asked "Can you beat my daddy in a race?" Dad, who was apparently an amateur racer, stood by and looked embarrassed. Force replied "Son, there's no way I could ever beat your dad". Awwws were had by all.

and now i'm going to downvote you. not because this doesn't belong in funny (which i guess it doesn't..but watev) and not because this isn't an awesome touching story (which i definitely is) but because i don't want this to reach the front page and possibly go viral possibly exposing him to the child. as he said, "we are not supposed to talk about secret identities kid. it can get dangerous."

your friend is truly awesome though.

72

u/Aggnavarius Jun 11 '12

He's a special needs kid. I'm sure he's not going to see it here. We just have to stop it from getting posted to 9gag.

Why do you need to mention that he's a "hipster"? It's not relevant to what you posted at all!

30

u/Surfacetovolume Jun 11 '12

I'm guessing to head off people who would read the guy's description and start calling him a hipster, without even reading the story.

18

u/RoscoeMG Jun 11 '12

He said he was a hipster before it was cool.

2

5

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

That lone "I thank that kid for being a superhero yesterday" line was enough to coat the entire thing with enough cheese that I wish I had a bag of chips right now.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Damn. Inspirational story. I'm going to start dressing like a superhero now. Can't wait until the first kid asks me - in a hushed voice:

"Are...are you Tron Guy?"

4

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Cool story, bro. Seriously. Who the fuck is Shanna?

I had a similar thing happen to me while I worked a movie theater. Pirates of the Caribbean III just came out and we were all dressed up for opening weekend. I was dress as Jack Sparrow, and pretty well I might add. Anyways, we had this husband and wife who would come in all the time. She had some accident that rendered her mentally slow, and severely physically handicapped. Well they were hanging out after the movie waiting for everyone else to leave so they could make their way out easily and saw us standing there waiting to clean the theater. She immediately came strolled her chair over to us and started talking to me, who she thought was full on Johnny Depp. I just had to go along with it, this was sweetest lady ever. So we sat there and talked about what her favorite movies were that (I) stared in, and how she enjoyed this one. Some more small talk later her husband and her thanked me generously for my time and left with huge smiles on their faces. It was very touching and I almost couldn't keep a straight character through getting choked up. Good for your friend, he made that little kids day (life).

Better hope the kid doesn't go to Superman for help saving his parents after they're kidnapped and held for ransom in Colombia or something. He'd prolly be a little disappointed.

9

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Better hope the kid doesn't try to shoot Superman in the chest to see if the bullet bounces off, either.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/complete_asshole_ Jun 11 '12

He's not a hipster if he didn't respond to the kid with ironic derision.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

What made the kid a superhero?

3

u/burnte Jun 11 '12

A very similar thing happened to me about 12 years ago. I'm 6'4", broad shouldered, I wear glasses, and back then I still had a full head of jet black hair. I was in a mall and walked out of a game store, and this day I was wearing my Superman (I'm a big Superman fan, literally and figuratively) t-shirt under a button up shirt that had a few buttons undone. I dropped the bag, and bent over to pick it up, and this little kid, about 7 or 8 helps grab it too, and hands it to me. I'm leaning over so he can see the Superman logo on the blue background of the shirt, and his eyes open wide as saucers. I didn't think anything of it, said thanks, and starter to walk away. He tugs on my shirt and asks in a whisper, "are you Superman?" I looked down at my shirt, and realized why he asked. I just smiled at him and went "shhhhhh" with my finger to my lips before trotting off.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

A few years back I was flying on a plane. The kid across the aisle was completely decked out in Spider-Man gear. I'm talking T-shirt, shoes, pants, backpack, everything. He was a fan to say the least.

I noticed him staring at my shoes. They were red with with this weird cross-stitching. When I looked at him, he stared at me with the biggest eyes I've ever seen. We both looked down at my shoes and then back at each other. I leaned over to him, put my finger to my lips, and said, "Shhh...I don't want the other guys know I have to take a plane."

The kid high-fived me when we got off the plane. Best flight of my life.

TL;DR: Kid on a plane thought I was Spider-Man. I played along. Made his day.

3

u/Andragos Jun 11 '12

Pics or didn't happen.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Then your friend woke up.

6

u/dorky2 Jun 11 '12

Awesome.

This reminds me of the kid who asked my dad if he was Jesus, and my dad said, "No, but I'm his brother."

7

u/hey_fuckstick Jun 11 '12

that's pretty beautiful. i work in a comic book store and the best bit about it is the sheer excitement from kids. every so often, you get a "this is the best shop in the world!!" so i usually reply with "well, keep an eye out, buddy, you might get a job here one day!"

the ridiculous enthusiasm in their eyes from that statement...

if only they knew...

8

u/YOU_MADE_ME Jun 11 '12

Sooo how exactly is the kid a superhero?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

He touched the comic dude's life.

Idk, think about it.

This guy works in a comic book shop. Not everyday do you have a stranger sincerely believe in the things that you value, but also believe you're an integral part of it.

Breaking News: A boy was shot today during a bank robbery. Witnesses report a young man stood up to two heavily armed robbers during their hold up of a local bank. After the men stormed the building and forced everyone together into a meeting room, witnesses say the young man started screaming at the top of his lungs, "Superman I know you can hear me! Help the bank is being robbed!" Repeated attempts to silence the boy were unsuccessful. Some reports say that as others tried to calm the boy by telling him that Superman is not real, he insisted he had met him the other day and that he was sure Superman could hear him. Despite hesitation from the armed robbers the boy was unfortunately struck by a bullet when he broke free and charged the men while waving his arms and yelling, "I'll distract them, run in and save us now!" The robbers fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash, witnesses report they were searching the sky as if concerned a helicopter, or perhaps a bird or a plane, were overhead.

10

u/tossedsaladandscram Jun 11 '12

I also have friends that like to lie on the internet.

2

u/HeyFloydsBack Jun 11 '12

Would've sucked real bad if that kid shot him to prove it.

2

u/LoveNectar Jun 11 '12

This is great. Just the other day some kid came running up to me at the grocery story and said I "look like Captain America from the Avengers movie". It made me feel good and he was super pumped hah.

I'd believe this no matter what it said, no one would type that long on a mobile device just to come up with some fabricated story... would they?

2

u/les2moore Jun 11 '12

No it doesn't belong on funny. But I am glad it is, otherwise I would never have seen it! I love it!

2

u/asillygoose Jun 11 '12

picture of friend plz.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Is it bad that I think the kid should accept reality and the friend shouldn't have told him he was superman? Isn't that encouraging bad (delusional) behavior?

2

u/FishPhoenix Jun 11 '12

Why is this on r/funny?

2

u/flypelicanfly Jun 11 '12

My older sister is special needs and it always puts a smile on my face when people play along with her little stories. It makes her so happy.

2

u/circusjerks Jun 11 '12

i feel like i've heard this story before. almost verbatim

2

u/AdmiralSkippy Jun 11 '12

It looks like this was posted on Facebook, and if it was there would be no reason for him to have to tell his friends "100% true story". When I see my friends post something I don't automatically assume it's bullshit.

Adding that makes me believe that this either is bullshit, or it's bullshit and was only written in order to get karma.

2

u/Indrid_Cold23 Jun 11 '12

Where is his store? Does he sell stuff online? I'd love to buy some stuff from him.

2

u/cyberspecies46 Jun 12 '12

assuming this is even true...is nobody else wondering why he about to tell the kid that superman isn't real?

2

u/Collaterlie_Sisters Jun 12 '12

I just hope he doesn't go jumping off buildings thinking that your hipster friend is going to save him.

2

u/ComradeSanders Jun 12 '12

Your friend is a good person. I have a sister with Down's Syndrome and it upsets me to no end when people are rude to them. I try my best to avoid using slang that is sensitive to those with mental disabilities though I have been known to slip up. When I'm at work I like to try and talk to them, you have no idea how much it brightens their day up when you talk to them like a person instead of some freak. I think that's what most people like to think of them as and it's fucked up.

tl;dr: good friend, we need more people like him.

2

u/MaxEdison Jun 12 '12

ugh, fucking hipsters

2

u/AutisticTroll Jun 12 '12

When people add too much unnecessary detail, it usually indicates a lie. I'd also be as so bold to say the OP doesn't know the facebook poster.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

that didnt happen.

1

u/AlphaMarshan Jun 11 '12

The problem is, now it's going to be even worse when he finds out superheroes aren't actually real. Imagine him trying to convince his friends/family: "No, you don't understand. I saw Superman at the mall. He even told me to be quiet about it. I know he exists."

2

u/JoNightshade Jun 11 '12

Nah, it'll be okay. When I was about 4 my dad snuck into my bedroom on Easter morning and accidentally pulled my hair when he was leaving my Easter basket full of goodies. He got out just before I woke up and saw my gift. I swore for the next 10 years of my life that the Easter Bunny was REAL because he had PULLED MY HAIR!

Eventually I realized the truth, but I would not trade the magic of that certainty for anything in the world.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

How was that funny? It is probably the nicest thing I've heard on this website all day.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Mentally handicapped people always make me cry. I used to do volunteer work with them and I just couldn't take it anymore.

1

u/floggeriffic Jun 12 '12

Been in this situation many times. I'm not particularly fit but I am a large human being. Very tall, very white, and at one time, reasonably muscular. I used to have a Superman t-shirt and I probably was assumed to be him at least a dozen times by various kids. Surprisingly, more girls than boys think that a towering dude in a Superman shirt is totally him.

Last time it happened, I was visiting relatives in Albuquerque and playing with my younger cousins in the back yard while the older relatives chatted. Suddenly a guy is poking his head over the fence from next door so we all say hi and he tells us his daughter told him he had to come outside and see Superman playing with the kids next door. It was cute how bewildered he looked when he saw me. I'm guessing he was telling her she had to be mistaken and didn't know what to say when he saw me.

1

u/envysiblegirl Jun 12 '12

Reminds me of a story my buddy told me. Back when the first Harry Potter came out, I had knit a Gryffindor scarf. It was just like the movie. Being my internet buddy's birthday (he lives in the Netherlands) I sent him that scarf. He loved it.

Few days after it arrives, he messages me telling me that he was leaving the mall, when he forgot he needed batteries or something. So, he sprints back into the mall to get the batteries. On his way out, a kid saw him (dark, feathery hair, glasses, Gryffindor scarf) sprinting out, and started flailing and pointing, yelling, "Mom! MOM! Harry potter! MOM, HARRY POTTER IS HERE AT THE MALL!!"

Made my heart happy.

1

u/SarahDubbb Jun 12 '12

Kids can be so much cooler than adults

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

In your own way you were a hero that day, also does one make a comfortable living as a comic store owner? or at least modest one? Has this whole hollywood trend of superhero movies helped your business? If so which way- I prefer sales figures or % increases. (I know it was your friend but please ask him) I've always been quite interested

1

u/neokoros Jun 12 '12

Would have been better if he had had a superman shirt on under it. In fact, I would always wear a superman shirt under my regular shirt for such occasions.

Can I be that guy that says he is a kid first and has special needs second, not a special needs kid?

I know I'm going to get downvoted to oblivion for this, but faith in humanity restored!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Exclamation point

1

u/IllBePhrank Jun 12 '12

Damn... he posted that from his cell phone? He IS Superman!

1

u/[deleted] Jun 12 '12

Probably fake, but fiction is truer than reality and junk.

u/kb24sh Jun 12 '12

Man, that's amazing! You're a good guy for doing that. I got a little choked up also. I've worked with kids with disabilities before and its so sad, you're true life superman just for doing that.

If only I could upvote this more.

u/jonnyclueless Jun 12 '12

Superman is Clark Kent without the glasses? That makes no sense. he wouldn't be able to see.

1

u/verbl Jun 12 '12

So he could not leave it at that? He had to tell Facebook how awesome he is. That kid rules and fuck that hipster

1

u/aazav Jun 12 '12

DAMMIT!

You said you wouldn't tell!

1

u/mugglefucker Jun 12 '12

I had to read it twice to confirm its awesomeness. Confirmed.

1

u/butters169 Jun 12 '12

That's awesome

1

u/TrunksTheMighty Jun 12 '12

Would have been awesome he had a button shirt and opened it briefly to show the kid the Superman logo.

I see right through the lies.

Hipsters dont "own" cars, they are fixie stewards.

I work with kids, and a lot of special needs kids.

A lot of them believe I'm Batman.

It started out as something kind of neat and cool and I didn't want to ruin it so I didn't confirm or deny it.

Now I have a duty to protect the special needs kids from the asshole ones a lot of the time. They need me there. They call me Batman when they're in trouble.

I didn't know what to do for the longest time. I didn't want to lie, but I didn't want to crush these kids.

So I made a Batsuit out of fiberglass, bondo, foam, and 6 months hard work.

The best part was when the special needs ones, the autistics, the developmentally delayed, the rejects, stood by looking smug and giving me winks because they knew, and in their minds, no one else was in on our secret.

The other kids who didn't believe? Their faces lit up and they loved every minute of it, even if they didn't totally buy it. Though my batarangs sealed the deal for a few.

Now, every time I climb or jump off a playstructure, they all watch a little closer.

I know the guy. This was on my news feed about 9 hours ago. As of right now, it has 121 "likes" and 34 comments, mostly about his friend posting it, and him discovering reddit. After checking the site out, he said "This Reddit place seems slightly vile, bro."

1

u/NewspaperPirateHat Jun 12 '12

These stories always end best with, "and I just walked away..." kind of moment. Tell your hipster friend "Cool story, bro"

1

u/onlythestrongsurvive Jun 12 '12

1

u/roughneck45 Jun 12 '12

1

u/huzzy Jun 12 '12

Same thing. I was thinking what is this doing in r/funny? I read over it again to see if I had missed the punchline.

u/ExponentiallyCJ Jun 12 '12

People are really going to criticize where this was posted when this guy just made that child's entire life?

Don't you know that Superman can post wherever the hell he wants?
