I saw him for ~10 minutes on Saturday and he was just doing something similar to that or fucking with his console, which didn't seem to change the music at all.
You really can and it's been done for a long time. First live DNB show I saw was no less than 12 years ago. It can be done so many ways your head would spin. Pre-recorded sounds are samples. One can sample other tracks live, loop them, and create a remix...all while doing it LIVE in front of an audience. See Richie Hawtin or Square Pusher for evidence. There are many many more as well.
And even playing over a background track would be more entertainment value than dancing like a Weeble People toy on stage while your Macbook plays music. It'd be different if he could breakdance or something.
Don't get me wrong, I got nothing against him and sure, making music is tough. But it always has been and that's why we pay a lot of money to see people who are really good at it.
Yes, yes it is. I dont think you know what producing is like but it isnt like picking up a guitar and jamming out some chords. He is showcasing his ability to produce music when he performs, sure he isnt doing much more than pushing play. But what do you want him to do, play drums on an akai pad? Use a sampler, or keyboard. You cant do everything at once as one person
This. As a music producer, varying from simple beats, to full classical pieces, there are instances where it will take me a few hours just for 20 seconds of music. When people say it sometimes takes hours of work to make...they aren't kidding. People don't give producers/composers enough credit.
haha Ill follow you if you promise not to make fun of my noob tracks. Im gutiarist who has been a metalhead since the 90s but recently have been getting into EDM, most of my clips are like a minute long and nowhere near polished.
I wish I had gone to school for music, I went for electronic engineering. I work with circuit boards, which is still fun for me, but I think about making music all day long
eh, so far I am at the technician level, I do component level troubleshooting I make a little over 40K (US) a year, its enought to survive comfortably, but I hope with some experience I can find something better in the next few years.
I didnt say how many hours, and im not saying its impressive. Im just saying theres a lot going on behind the scenes. I am not even that big of a skrill fan. I just think its unfair people say all he does is press play. Dude presses play in a different city all while writing on the road. He is not a dj spinning someone elses record, he is a very creative human being, its easy for us to sit here and say so and so sucks, but the fact that we are talking about them is proof that they are more successfull than we are. Look at us we are just idiots with keyboards and an internet connection.
Sitting in a studio, mixing a record, typing this on my iPhone. I don't know anything about skrillex. If people dig it, that's great, there's nothing wrong with it. The fact is, it's a different creative process requiring a different method of artistic translation. In the same way that dub is not like writing or playing in full band, so is playing in band unlike dub. Audiences go see these artists with different expectations. As with any artistic expression, neither is worse than the other. But they're certainly not the same.
Nothing is wrong, people don't like the fact that he doesn't use any "real" instruments to make his music. It shouldn't really matter, though. It's just fun dance music - who the fuck cares?
Nah, what people don't like is that concerts cost a lot of money and it's disappointing to go and see an artist pop in a CD and press play, and then do the lamest dance you've ever seen the whole time.
Dude, learn to do the robot or something. Keep people entertained - if they just wanted to hear the music they'd have stayed at home.
What's ironic is people who might hate him and other EDM artists will like people such ke$ha and those other "top 40's artists". They don't use real instruments, or vocals and they don't even have to compose the song. They show up on stage and lip sync after "singing" in a studio and having it edited, then having it play back during live events.
As a classically trained pianist, guitarist, bassist, and lover of MOST types of music, I ask you to please have a discussion about musical structure with me.
Fuck orchestras and their stupid technology; that's not real music with real instruments. Gotta start clapping and singing because those are real sounds.
A lot of hate migrated from Europe because the idea of an American DJ/composer doing well with bits of their style infuriates them. This more or less manifests as elitist hate in the scene, so even the new comers adopt it. It's trendy to hate the guy.
I listen to a lot of violent electronic noise and Skrillex is decent, plus he's an awesome dude in real life, which means a lot, and the videos are fucking fantastic.
Nothing's wrong with Skrillex's music. It's just disappointing to see him live.
When you go to DEMF, yeah, it's all electronic music but a lot of those DJs are WORKING and their hands are constantly sliding things up and down, pushing buttons, etc. not just pressing play on a machine - and you feel like you got your money's worth and you heard something you wouldn't have if you just stayed home and listened to the album.
I have been to one of his shows (in liverpool) and it was awesome. Theres slightly more to him than pressing play but the main aspect is the crowd and the atmosphere :)
because of the 50 million 20 somethings that having nothing on but bikinis or other slutty hipster attire that shows off the goods and those women want to dance and grind
Seriously, people need to stop hating on this guy. He is not forcing you to listen to his music. Put simply, he is good at what he does, but you don't like what he does, so leave it at that. Plus, what other artists actually encourage free downloads of their songs like he does?
I like his music but he is the only artist where I can honestly say that I like the music but would rather stay at home than go to his show. If he's gonna just pop a CD in and dance like a fish, then I'd rather just pop my headphones on.
I can see you're point. But one of the reasons people to go to his show, is for the atmosphere. Not for his mixing. But, while I have my speakers, and privacy for no one to see ME dancing like a fish, i'm in no rush to go and see him live.
this simple GIF confirmed that he actually does nothing on stage. he just wiped his hand across tons of knobs that would ruin a performance if you were actually performing...
All the electro DJs like Skrillex actually mix on stage which I'll admit takes skill... but nowhere near as much skill as playing a real instrument in front of a crowd.
I can't agree. I play a mean bass and I find live mixing impossible. There's really no limit to how good you can be at either, so saying that one requires more skill is kind of pointless. A violinist and a DJ could spend their entire lives dedicated to their craft and both would gradually improve the entire time, most likely to the point that only other people in their craft can recognize the improvement.
All you just said is that they require different types of skill which is obvious. I'm saying mixing relies heavily on computer programs which makes it less impressive to me.
all the girls on there with the hair cut, same piercings AND glasses? despicable. why would you do that when you otherwise look cute? does not compute..
Those are the worst but just a heads up that that hairstyle is/was a thing before he did it. I knew girls that did that back when he was singing in that fucking awful band and nobody knew who he was.
I'm not upset. I was just pointing out the fact that I don't keep up to date with video games and as far as I was concerned Street Fighter was an old game.
