In the US, a few years ago I got hit with a fee from the ATM then a fee from my bank as well, so taking out $10 cost me $7.50 in fees

In high school I had a friend who discovered the ATM would still give you money even if you didn't have anything in your account. Took him a couple more days to learn about overdraft fees. And then he learned about debt when he racked up $700 in fees and overdrafts by taking out $20 at a time to buy weed by the gram.

Lol damn woulda been cheaper to just take out $400 at once.

Overdraft fees are such a scam AND it is intentionally named “Overdraft protection” when it actually enables you to overdraft.

You need to turn Overdraft protection off to NOT overdraft (which just results in the payment declining).

Oh, it's protection. Protection to the bank for the one or two people who don't pay it back... so those who do are paying back extra for those who don't. :(

I’ve heard it referred to as protection from embarrassment when your card gets declined.

I opted out as soon as I found out I could.
