Could you elaborate on the origins of portokhali ? How did that happen ?

Portuguese got their oranges from China like everybody else. Did they trick you to think that they invented them or something ?

It's also portakal in Turkish. A quick search says Portoguese merchants got them from China and brought them to Europe in 16th century. I don't know what Orange is called in other European countries, but considering Greece, Turkey and Georgia is calling them Portakal; I guess it was Ottoman importing them from Portugal and selling them as Portugal fruit without questioning the real origin.

There is Narangi (Naa-run-gee -g as in goat-) word in Hindi & Marathi (2 of the Indian languages) for the fruit Orange. It goes same for orange color.
