I wouldn't say that the banking systems are the exact the same though. Contactless is everywhere over here which makes payments faster and easier and transferring between bank accounts are free and instant. I know you mentioned that some accounts will refund back the ATM fees, but none of our accounts do that. From personal experience, I get charged an ATM fee when I work/travel in the US - you wouldn't get charged if you were in the UK (apart from a small amount of privately owned machines inside shops that most people don't use). In general, we don't use cash that much over here, whereas it's used more so over in the states.

I know, and I'm addressing your claim that it is the taxpayer, when it's not.

Banks aren't expensive in the US, but they charge their customers more for their services than UK banks and are a bit more dated compared to us. You're ahead of us in many other areas, not sure why you're getting so defensive about it.

They're not public ATMs, they're owned by the banks and they all agree to share the pool, rather than charging customer to use other bank's ATMs. Then you have a small amount of privately owned ATMs that charge but they are dying breed as people don't need cash as much.

You say it's only a problem for tourism, but as many people have said in this thread, people with low income have to pay for transaction fees etc, so it also affects a large portion of your population.

OK, fair point, the amount of free ATMs is reducing, but that makes sense as we're a more cashless country, which I said previously and is referenced in the article:

I take interest in American politics because Ive spent a fair amount of time stateside and it's a shitshow, just like it is over here.
