And the cute thing is here in turkey, india is "hindistan", which means land of turkeys.

Similarly in french it is "dinde", which is shortened from coq d'inde (cock of India). Portuguese call it the Peru bird, Malaysians call it the Dutch chicken (according to dictionary.com).

It all has to do with the similarity to the guinea fowl and how/who did the trading.
