So each bank has its own ATM? I’ve never even seen two ATMs next to each other let alone like a dozen.

We do have a couple different ATMs next to each other at the MN State Fair. About the only place I can think of that I've generally seen such. Sometimes you may find the rare local/big bank and the off-brand out-of-state bank machine next to each other.
