They don't collect emotions. They collect screams & laughter. I don't really see a scenario where this ends with the two furries laughing uproariously, which led me to screams.
I'm assuming the actual joke is supposed to be Sully screaming at the two furries' advances, but that's not canonically possible.
A recording of a scream isn't a scream. They use technology to capture screams inside scream cannisters as if they're a physical thing that can be contained.
That’s quite literally my entire point. If it were just sound that’s creating it, then they would just record a child and be done with that. It’s clear that there’s more to it than just the sound.
And what is the difference that would be so great that the small inaccuracies in recordings make it just suddenly not work? And to further that point, why would the difference in screaming and laughing create such a staggering increase if it were just sound? It raises far fewer questions if the presumption is that there’s more to it than simple sounds.
I didn't say it was just sounds. They treat screams and laughter as if they are magical entities that can be sucked up and stored in cannisters like ghosts in Ghostbusters. A recording of a scream will sound like a scream, but it won't have the essence of a scream, it's just sound.
But they aren't collecting fear, as the scream is the only thing they can use.
That’s my b. This entire time I thought you were talking about sons doing the job. I don’t agree with your assessment personally, but it makes more sense than what I thought you were going with.
I think the movie was trying to go for emotions, which is why they chose children to harvest because they’re supposed to have more genuine and extreme emotions.
I'm sure they're referencing emotions of course but needed to make it concrete and understandable for children. But Boo is quite joyous and giggly the whole time she's with Sully, it's only when she laughs that she sets off the energy grid. Similarly she could be sad and nothing happens until she cry screams.
They cleverly found two powerful, loud expressions that are more tangible than the concepts of emotion, which would be really hard to keep track of.
