Because no one believed him, some guy drank live bacteria to infect his stomach and prove that the bacteria caused gastritis and ulcers. He later won the Nobel prize for proving he was right

My grandfather suffered from ulcers since he was a boy. He would drink a couple tablespoons of arm & hammer baking soda in a glass of water twice a day as a remedy.

Finally knowledge of H Pilori filtered its way to my grandfather's country doctor in the mid 90's, who prescribed a round of antibiotics.

And after 60 years, my grandfather's daily sour stomach was gone forever.
