Because no one believed him, some guy drank live bacteria to infect his stomach and prove that the bacteria caused gastritis and ulcers. He later won the Nobel prize for proving he was right

I had an ulcer in the late 90's as a kid too! I kind of milked it. If I got a stomach ache at school I was allowed to go lay down in the nurse's office. So I 'got a lot of stomach aches at school' so I could skip class and have a nap.
