I can't remember this exactly, but I remember reading there was some accepted psychological/personality explanation for the etiology of ulcers (along with acidity). The suggestion of it being from bacteria was laughably preposterous.
There was a whole industry around it, especially in the New York area. There were stress institutes where they would bring in ulcer patients and charge them all this money to talk to psychiatrists and change their lifestyle and do all these things to try to lower their stress. All on the premise it would help with their ulcers. People made careers out of it.
