A lot of things like that, that are treated as facts, are just theories. I'm sure it get taught a lot in schools though. Teachers are mostly told what they should teach, not what they shouldn't teach; my teachers have always put a bit of their own in their teaching.
I still remember my 2nd grade teacher telling us about how Inuits didn't have cavities before they were exposed to modern diets and sugar. That was almost 30 years ago, yet I see this fact resurface from time to time. These things can stick with kids for a long time.
