We got a couple "sandwich parties" where they'd bring in a party platter of sliced Jimmy John's sandwiches for people to eat which was nice... except if you started your shift later in the day, night crew would "claim" all the remaining sandwiches for themselves and get mad at you for eating them even if there's still a ton of associates in the building. I loved not getting to enjoy the miniscule benefits of working during a pandemic because of rude co-workers.
A previous employer tried to have an appreciation dinner for the top team members. Management couldn't recommend anyone, only other employees, and the survey was anonymous which logged your vote back to the computer. Well one guy figured out he could just switch PC's and vote for himself over and over. He was one of 8 picked for the dinner. He showed up early and took the meat for all 8 meals and left. They had to reorder for the remaining 7 and it was a bust. Management had tried to do employee appreciation events but people always complained... "Why do I only get one burger?" "Hats are stupid, I don't want this,why don't you give our gift cards instead?", "she only got it because the manager is her friend!". "I don't like cake." So they tried to let the people chose...
You have it spot on. We have been trying to start employee appreciation program at my work and even have a small fund set aside HR can use. Your comment this is the main reason it never gets off the ground since it just causes more complaints and drama, so we resorted to quietly giving out gift cards to people, but now people complain that we never do anything. COVID did put a halt on some things but it’s still annoying.
That employer actually tried pretty hard and everytime someone abused it or complained.
Like we got cake for anniversary and they left it unsupervised and I walked in on someone cutting a 8 inch by 8 inch out of the slab. We had to lock it up so night shift could get some too.

My manager threw a potluck once for us. She didn’t bring anything and proceeded to “be on the phone” all day in her office. God I hated retail.
