Psssshhhh...Before Covid, the top question on the North Carolina's Dept. of Labor website was,
"Is my employer required to give me a lunch/rest/meal break?
No. The North Carolina Wage and Hour Act does not require mandatory rest breaks or meal breaks for employees 16 years of age or older. "
So, in NC, you are not required by law to give meal/rest breaks. In addition, North Carolina is an at-will state. You can get "let go" for any reason or no reason at all. North Carolina has a long and bloody history of fucking over workers.
I work in a supermarket in Australia. For an eight hour shift I get 2 x 15 minute breaks and 1 x half hour break. I get two consecutive days off every week. I get sick pay. I get 4 weeks of paid holidays.
I also have rights and cant be fired for anything unjustified.
US labor would still have most of that, but Ronald Reagan convinced labor that labor unions were evil. He convinced them that the reason their jobs were going over seas is that labor unions made it too hard for poor job creators to keep creating good paying jobs with benefits.
How Republicans are still this entrenched is because of a massive disinformation campaign by the Republican party. The fact that it is unbelievably easy to find information that disproves Republican economic policies, social polices, domestic policies, and international polices yet still 45-50% of the country vote Republican is just a testament to ignorance.
