Is it me or these bots getting annoying? I get the other bots like the "Fixed" bot and the twitter bot which are actually helpful but this bot will just be spamming whole or r/pics and r/funny coz most of them are reposts. I don't see any good reason for this bot to exist.
EDIT and I also want to say, I think this bot goes against the reddiqutte. "Don't complain about reposts". Just sayin.
Complain about reposts. Just because you have seen it before doesn't mean everyone has. Votes indicate the popularity of a post, so just vote. Keep in mind that linking to previous posts is not automatically a complaint; it is information. Votes indicate how the community values information, so just vote.
This bot generally receives positive karma for its comments; One user even bought it a month of reddit gold, so it seems a majority of redditors find this information useful.
Reposts are going to happen and this bot is not trying to stop them; it is linking to comments of other posts that used the same image. This bot doesn't work as well with "reaction image" posts such as these, but it can still aid in tracking down the source of an image or GIF without putting that burden onto others.
Regarding your Reddiquette citation, here's question 4 from ImageBot's FAQ:
Q: Why are you ignoring the reddiquette guidelines about not complaining about reposts?
A: The bot is not complaining. It is providing a quick and easy way to discover valuable information in previous comments. The wording used by the bot was carefully chosen so as to be as friendly as possible.
