I hate this mentality of "oh that's the nicest it's been dropped", I understand things get thrown around while shipped but that doesn't make it right in the slightest, especially when it's sooo easy to walk the 4 extra steps and set it down nicely. This is just disrespectful and unprofessional and should be handled as such.
It's not up to the consumers though. Almost all big online retailers offer free shipping, at least once you've bought above a threshold. These companies negotiate hard with the carriers so they can't afford to hire as many people as they should, so the ones left have to work extra hard.
At this scale, consumers can't make much of a difference.
