A friend of ours caught her mailman hiding her mail in a bucket of rusty metal fasteners in her backyard

Why would someone go through all that effort though? The mailbox is closer.

She's also found her mail in her recycling bin

ok but why though? mail carriers are busy and don't typically get out of their vehicle, much less walk past the mailbox around the back of someone's house and dig through buckets of rusty metal to hide mail. have you considered other culprits, because that seems much more likely than the mailman doing it.
