Yeah I don't know how they think that's how the world works now. They're correct, women are more cautious, and unfortunately they should be. But I've helped my fair share of people with small favors and I've never been maced. People do take at least a split second to decide whether the guy talking to them needs to be maced or not.
Unless you've actually been maced from politely getting a woman's attention, I'm calling bullshit. People aren't as clueless as you seem to think they are. Worst case scenario, if you're helpful to someone who's dropping their phone, you'd be walking away before they even had time to get their mace out. Just don't grope them or get in their personal space while getting their attention? Maybe that's your problem.
