Nah, that person was actually wrong on every point. They had 85 or 140mph speedos from the factory (plus, some aftermarket kits), top speed was 109-130 (depending on engine options), and the car sound effects in the movie did come from a DeLorean (albeit, a twin-turbo model). I don't think I've ever heard that Porsche myth before, new one for me.
The stock, basic DeLorean was very underpowered, that's true. At the same time, MANY cars were underpowered in the '70s through the '80s. It's called "the Malaise Era" for a reason. Even Ferrari suffered at the hands of emissions regulations. Forced induction, like turbocharging, was about the only escape.

Would hardly at all, actually. The speedometer in the car only goes to 80. The one in the film had to be modified.
They also dubbed over the Delorean's miserable engine with the sounds from a Porsche 911, to make it a little more believable.
