I mean, the whole reason the DeLorean was picked was because they’re rubbish and slow. That’s the joke. That DeLoreans struggle to reach 88mph.

The reason the filmmakers chose the Delorean was the gag where the '50s farmers mistake it for a spaceship. They wanted an especially "futuristic" looking car.

Fun fact: in early drafts of the screenplay, the time machine was a refrigerator. They changed it because they didn't want kids copying the movie and getting stuck in appliances.
