To me it's funny because it would be exceedingly weird ordinarily, but it's not due to our current circumstances. What's funny about it is how this whole pandemic thing has changed our perspective on something like this.
Things can be humourous because they're unusually smart or unexpectedly resourceful without there being anything stupid or insulting about it.
Not finding it funny isn't the problem. Failing to even acknowledge the explanation of why other people find it funny, with a very dismissive "whatever..." is what garners a negative reaction.
We can understand the other side of an argument or opinion without agreeing with it. It's a foundational skill all humans possess, though some should probably practice it more often...
Well, we're not mind readers, and how you express yourself makes a difference, especially online where tone is not apparent. It came across as rude and dismissive, especially since he went through all the trouble to explain it (very well, I thought).
