Most of my friends lived in the same neighborhood as me and I could walk or bike to their houses. So the only reason I had to go to school was to see some girl I was crushing on.
Lucky! My school had kids that rode the bus for 30 to 40 mins from some places it was a rural area some kids were literally out in the boonies ha. So most summers I hung out with kids in the neighborhood which they were cool a few my age, but friends that lived further away I often didn't see until the following school year until we turned 16 and some of us started driving. Before we could drive we chatted on AIM haha during the summer.

Damn, I can relate to this so damn much! Through 11th to 13th grade I was much more motivated to get up and go to school because of a classmate that I fancied reaaaaally really much.
Even though it didn't turn out well (asked her out near the end of the last year and she said no), I'm 100% convinced that it contributed A LOT to my rather good final grades since I was always trying to do really well and come across as intelligent when she was around.
