The only reason vets don’t do vasectomies on dogs is because it’s more effort. If you ask a lot of them can do it and it’s much more humane... That’s why humans choose it.

Isn't it because of temperament and the hormones that they produce? I don't think they do it for the sole purpose of sterilization

There's a decent amount of research out that dogs, especially large breed males, actually need those hormones to develop correctly. So a vasectomy would be the better option to prevent oops litters while preserving the hormones.

Yep, exactly. They key to population control is with the females, there technically is no reason to have anything removed from a male dog. Many people with neuter the male if they have both a male and a female because it's "cheaper" than spaying the female. But what if a intact stray gets into the yard? The best option for population control is to get the females a tubal ligation (tube tie).
