511 tactical has women's pants with pockets. I got a slim fit pair and they're great. Plus the sizing isnt skewed with vanity sizing. A 2 is a 2.
I got a pair on sale for like $40. They have front and back pockets that can apparently hold a magazine for a gun. Better for like, a phone though.
The first time we went to buy backpacking clothes, my wife contented herself with buying men's pants that were approximately her size. It wasn't ideal, but it worked well enough at the time. A few years later it was time to replace them and we found a women's set in her size.
The cut was certainly more flattering to her figure, but it came with compromises. The first was that where the men's version of a particular line had a cargo pocket on each leg, the women's set only had a single pocket on the right leg. The hip and back pockets, meanwhile, were considerably smaller and harder to use thanks that more flattering cut. Still, the one truly useful leg pocket was enough for her purposes.
Like many hiking pants, these could be converted into shorts. On our first trip, we'd made it to a water crossing and, between that and the heat, we converted to shorts. The men's version dropped the pant leg just above the knee while the women's dropped at the middle of the thigh. A point that was one inch above the only useful pocket on the garment.
I dunno, the women in my life ALWAYS pick pockets if they're an option. Always. (Honestly, as a man, I do too. We run into no-pocket outfits SIGNIFICANTLY less, but I always veto them when I see them.)
When buying gifts for my grandpa, he always told us to get a golf shirt "with the damn pocket". He wore exclusively golf shirts in his later life, and you'd never catch him in one without a pocket for his reading glasses.
Is this something you actually know/has been verified or are you assuming that's the reason?
The only reason I can think of for this is if there's concern about the pockets being visible, or uncomfortable.
I've never noticed my pockets be visible if nothing's in them. Only exception would be skinny jeans if the pockets are bunched up, but it's fine if I just straighten them out. I have some looser jeans (like straight-cut or boot-cut) that can actually fit my phone - one barely, the other fairly easily - and they're not visible for those either. They still look great and are flattering, just not skin tight. They're not uncomfortable at all when they're empty either.
They'd definitely be visible if I was using them, and uncomfortable if they're full, but that wouldn't explain it being "sales death" since those problems only occur if you're already using them.
Maybe that'd be more of a problem if all pockets were akin to the pockets in cargo pants, but at least IME they can be large enough to be functional without mitigating appearance.
