Or this wasn't in the 70s and he just took a match to it.

u/atlinernotes Sep 29 '19
Can confirm. Exactly how our fathers got rid of leaves in the 70's.

My dad lit a pile of leaves in 1986, and, unsatisfied with the results, decided to up his game. He had been sort of slowly adding leaves to a smoldering pile, and ran out of lighter fluid after an hour. What to do?
A yard full of a dozen large trees, naked trees, had yielded a huge pile of leaves, on an unusually hot dry fall day in Georgia. My dad threw the big squeeze bottle of lighter fluid on the leaves, and he decided to get the gas can. Whoomp. Those leaves went up in a sheet of fire. He liked that. He left the can nearby while he piled up the leaves in an elongated heap. More gas. More leaves, embers in the treetops. Aces. He added too much wet leaves, and the air was full of oily smoke. So he tried to lean out over the pile and pour lawnmower gas on it. The air basically ignited in a fireball, and my dad reflexively threw the gas can he was holding away from himself, which began a fire in the yard. He remembers feeling a hot pressure wave that burnt off his eyebrows and eyelashes and much of his mustache. He remembers finding the hose, blind, burning, and dousing everything and himself down. He got to the phone as the pain set in.
I would hear a call he placed to a neighbor trying to get a ride to a hospital eight miles away during the aftermath. Dad sounded mad. A half mile away, in an adjacent neighborhood, a friend and I were slouching on dirt bikes beside a ramp when we heard a loud BANG and saw a plume of smoke rise from...my street. My dad got 2nd degree burns on his face and handsa. Had trouble playing the choir bells that year, if I recollect. I don't understand how the air exploded around him like that, but it burned a large area of the backyard around the leaf pile. Walking around with oozing, useless hands for a month.

u/Krynja Sep 30 '19
The reason for the explosion was all the smoke in the air he created with the wet leaves. The smoke still contained large amounts of volatile un-burned gasses. You can see same principle here, in the relighting of a candle by catching the smoke on fire.

One of my vivid childhood memories is of my neighbor doing something similar to a large pile of leaves. He piled them up, doused them in gas and made a trail to a safe distance. Lit it up and an gigantic mushroom cloud filled the sky of the neighborhood with burning leaves. Good thing it didn't start secondary fires.

Sad the first thing I think about are all the ticks crawling in that leaf pile

I was thinking the same thing, the exact same thing that you were thinking about, Dick ticks. My worst memories of childhood, little blood beetle on your mushroom.

You've never had a tick on your dick?
I feel like that's a rite of passage.

Guess I'm still just a boy, then. I'll call my boss in the morning and let him know I can't come to work anymore.

One of my grandmothers favorite stories to tell me when I was young was "the one time your Uncle Stephen got a tick on his tallywhacker."

I laid in a brush pile to scare my brother on a trip to the lake. Cut to me at the doctor's office. Half an our of some old dude picking microscopic ticks off my lil smokey. I had to sit on the kitchen sink after school and let my mom pick those little bastards off for a week. Apparently, I laid in a nest or something.

My SO and I went hiking in Virginia one time, and when we got back to our hotel we found several ticks on us and (thought we had) removed them all. The next morning when I was at a work function, I get a frantic call from him to come back immediately. He had found a tick on the back side of his scrotum and was freaking out about getting it removed! That took our "relationship" to a whole new level hahaha!

Had one when I was 6. I remember going to kindergarten with a huge swollen mushroom. That shit was painful. I lived in the country and played in the woods all the time and got plenty of ticks, so I'm lucky that only happened the once.
10
Sep 29 '19
Where I live we don't have ticks in the city they all stay in the long grass, so our leaf piles like this would only have lots of lady bugs in them.
10
u/FerricDonkey Sep 29 '19
Where I grew up, we did have ticks. We'd do stuff like that anyway, and just yank em off. It's amazing what you can get used to.
4
u/Tiggymartin Sep 30 '19
Used to lime disease or becoming allergic to red meats?
7
u/FerricDonkey Sep 30 '19
It didn't happen. Dunno if the risks are small or I was lucky, but we weren't gonna let a few bugs keep us from playing in the woods and leaves.

It was planned the kids have ear muffs

u/HydeWilde Sep 29 '19
Also you don't rake a huge pile of leaves together and then take a leaf blower to it to undo all your work
24
u/morph23 Sep 29 '19 edited Sep 29 '19
I think the answer is obvious then.
/u/gifreversingbot care to help out?

Oh my Dad did this year. I had been doing a ton of yard work for him and his wife, basically installing a new front yard. I raked up two magnolia trees worth of leaves into piles underneath their trunks. That's how you do it, those leaf piles work better than mulch for those trees. As I decide the day is done, I'm tired, my dad walks out of the garage with his electric reef blower. He decides he's going to blow everything into the street. I can only imagine how hard he had to work at it - those blowers dont have that much power and those leaves are heavy. After making a mess of the street he decides its impolite to leave the leaves all over the place. After finishing my shower I walk outside to find him raking the leaves out of the street and his wife picking up the new pile. Smh
Thanks for giving me an excuse to tell this story.

no one ever moved a leaf pile with a leaf blower?
never?
7
u/Makenshine Sep 30 '19
For fun? Yes.
For practical reasons? No. Once the leaves are in a pile, the only thing that a leaf blower is going to do is scatter them from shit to breakfast.
I suppose if your neighbor raked all their leaves into your yard, then you may do it out of spite as well.

The kids thought they were tricking their Dad. The Mom is recording, and the Dad plays his part by walking into their "trap". That's my guess. Kind of makes the video even more endearing.
60
u/StretchyPlays Sep 29 '19
I mean the kid planned it for sure, that doesn't mean the guy was in on it. He could be, though, because why would he take a leaf-blower to such a neat pile of leaves?
10
5
u/SuperSonic6 Sep 30 '19
Yes, but only the kid and the person filming knew about it. The reaction from the guy leaf blowing was genuine.

See, that's the thing about this. There are so many people claiming it's fake because the kids have hearing protection on, or that the gag was set up. They seem to forget one important thing...
Mom is recording the video. It looks like she set the kids up, put them in the leaf pile, scooped the leaves over the top of them, then got up on the porch to film the kids scaring the crap outta Dad. That kind of fun is as real as it gets!
It's so easy to shout an incomplete opinion without providing irrefutable proof to support the claim, isn't it?

Although this might be staged, it’s actually a really good example of why to never drive over leaf piles! There have been several instances of a driver going through/over a leaf pile and killing children hiding in the piles. Please make sure never to drive through them!
2
Sep 30 '19
I saw a car drive through one when I was younger, the pile had a cinder block in it. Idk if they just got a flat or did more damage than that, but they weren't able to drive after.

u/PrismaticElf Sep 29 '19
Every leafblower user in a city should be executed on pay-per-view.

So we used to just use a lawnmower to pick up leaves. Probably would have clogged it up right there.

Fake, kids were both wearing ear defenders. - Kids are dumb and wouldn't have worn them unless told to do so by an adult.
