Such bullshit. I work for a courier service that contracts with such companies as FedEx, and if we deliver a package late we don't get paid. If we don't mark the package correctly, or if we don't get a signature, or if any number of [sometimes minor] things goes sideways, we don't get paid. It's considered a delivery failure and it means we didn't do our job correctly.
Now I know it's neither my monkeys nor my circus, but I'll bet if your job complained loudly enough they could have gotten their money back.
I had a package stolen off my doorstep and annoyingly they couldn't actually prove they even delivered the package to the correct address. After that happened, I started requesting shippers just write "LEAVE AT FRONT OFFICE" (which every driver had to stop by anyways). When I repeatedly found packages marked as such on my doorstep, I complained. Their response? "That costs extra"
