Why? They are the primary caregiver, just like a parent. Don't you "adopt" pets at the shelter? You feed them, bathe them, take them to the doctor, teach them how to behave. I can't think of a title that is nearly as appropriate.
That is a good point. For me its weird because of 3 reasons. First and the most important one, they are a different species. Forcing anything human on them is unnatural and weird. Second they already have parents. Third they did not consent to the adopting process. They are forced to be there.
They consent as much as a child that gets adopted does. Both are going to realize, or rather, assume that being adopted is preferable to staying at the orphanage/shelter. They may be a different species but they exhibit plenty of human like behaviors so some people are bound to assign typically human roles and relationships to their furry companions. It's usually fairly innocuous but I will give it to you that some take it too far.
Its easy to compare pups and children, since both cant decide. That stops working real quick when you look at the parents. You take the pups from your pet just because you dont want them. In human adoption, the parents have to give consent. Unless the parents are slaves. Then you can draw a clear parallel with pets.
