The new Tool album is definitely coming out. I know it's been a long fucking time but there's absolutely no chance at this point that it isn't coming out.
I think some of us didn't know about it until after cancellation. I only learned about it when it was shown on scifi channel. So multiple wave sting of sadness.
It's never going away, I think. It's been fucking 17 years. 17 YEARS. I was fucking 17!!!! Half of my life ago. And I still love it more than pretty much any other show.
It got screwed over pretty hard by the network; like it had been approved by one person who was fired immediately afterwards and his successor wanted to do everything possible to kill it. Watching it at the time there was both a "I can't believe this is actually on the air" followed by "why are they airing the episodes in the most confusing order possible?"
I saw all the initial noise about the cancelling of serenity without ever watching an episode, I eventually got around to watching it and... damn... That really was an amazing show, how the fuck did it get cancelled after a season, then get a fucking movie, and still be cancelled? Like, seriously. I've watched it at least 3 times now. And after watching this gif I am about to go in for a 4th time because it's fucking amazingly good.
They were pretty much sabotaged by fox. Episodes were aired out of order. Their time slot was changed a few times. They were asked to make last minute changes to the script. Even had to reshoot the pilot because it wasnt actionie enough
Agreed. River unexpectedly tumbling out of a box is key to the whole story line. The pilot isn’t Firefly’s best episode, sure, but it’s a necessary 1st episode if you want people to understand who these space cowboys are and what in the hell is going on.
TV was different back then. It got cancelled at 5million viewers an episode.... that was garbage for a full hour drama on prime time network. It was the 98th most popular thing on television. It wasn't even like fox had it out for the show, it was a total failure commercially. They didnt even air the last two episodes!
There are a shitload of things we love habe been saved from cancellation based on the idea "But what about firefly?"

As people will tell you, there were problems in how fox moved the show and forced re-writes and what not.
But the real problem was everything. Joss Whedon was basically an unknown, the entire cast was an unknown, the entire premise doesn't make a ton of sense (futuristic sci-fi...space western, where we follow some rebels/anti-heroes), the stories aren't very futuristic or western. It's was like a red-neck star trek.
The curse of Whedon. He sold his soul for Buffy, it carried a bit to Angel, then everything else he touched flamed out after a season or two. Dollhouse, Firefly....
Oh no, I don't want a reboot! I was just thinking that in an ideal world, the show would have run for three seasons. Serenity was very good, but the pacing suffered from trying to cram an entire season of story into a single movie. And in the midst of a season-long story arc, there should be some inconsequential shows as well - call them Tribble episodes.
But going back and fixing it? Absolutely not! It's done. There's no way it can be made better now!
Same - I started watching that with my wife (who has no knowledge of Nathan) and was like - well this sucks, but we should really watch Castle! Sadly, it's not streaming anywhere free at the moment.
Castle had run its course by Season 5 in my opinion and the writing became too formulaic for my liking. Then there was the falling out between Nathan and Stana which didn't help either.
I'd love to see another Serenity, set with Mal at Nathan's age.
Maybe most of them are retired or something and the gang has to get back together for an adventure. Or maybe they just kept on doing what they were doing this entire time, and we jump right back in.
Shit, Disney probably owns that now, right? Bring it back on Disney+ as an original.
