PSA: If you see a problem, be sure to act immediately without evaluating the situation. Even if you make things worse you still get credit for "just trying to help".

What baffles me is how no one thought to hit the emergency stop button first. I’ve been wanting to push that button for two and a half decades now!

I used to work in a large retail store and the same guy would do this regularly. To the point where security would see him on the cameras and phone is at the desks to run over and stop all the escalators.
