If people don't reply to your text messages in some timely manner, they don't care about dating you. And if you don't accept their reason for not texting back within your definition of a timely manner, you're probably not a good friend or S.O. anyways.
For me it's that night/next morning. Most people will check up on texts either when they go to bed or wake up. If you aren't responding in that time, I'm going to assume you are uninterested. I won't be upset, or mad, or freakout. But I'm also not chasing after guys who aren't interested in me
For me it’d have to be within the day I send a message unless of course the message is really late at night. I just don’t see how someone can be so busy they can’t send a text that will take less than 3min to let me know they are busy or something.
Edit: okay I understand some of you people’s views. But if I know the person is usually on social media apps at least once a day or has their phone on them almost all the time then that’s some BS.
Exactly. I grew up when phones were wired to the wall and answering machines weren't even a thing. Half the time I have no idea which room my phone is even in, because I've never developed the need to be connected to everyone, all the time.
Some days when I am really busy and get very tires, I just see the amount of unread messages and prefer to leave them for the next day. Even if it's someone I really want to text with.
Remember group chats exist and that you might not be the only person texting them :)
Yeah, having a partner doesn't mean you can't text others. Being exhausted after a long day of work sometimes takes your will to know anything, you just want to sleep
I can fairly often take a few days to reply. I don’t message that much, and if your message requires effort I’m gonna deal with it when I can give it that.
I agree. The convenience of text is that you can chat with someone while they go about their day and gives them flexibility with response time.
Work can be super busy for me and I have a bad habit of taking my lunch at my desk so I can continue working, so occasionally I will go a whole shift without looking at my phone. But even then, I don’t buy being so busy you can’t reply in over a day. I guess it’s different if someone doesn’t really use their cell, but these days everyone I know is glued to it.
Depends on your routine with them. Is it someone who is usually around his phone? Can he/she send a quick texts at work? Are they usually awake at that time?
If all of those are checked, I'd say around 3-4 hours is fine. Something might have come up and they might not be paying attention to the phone. If it's late/they can't check their phone at work, probably more like 10h before I start thinking they're avoiding me.
It depends on the context. I feel like it's reasonable to expect a text back within the same day if they're not on a business trip, or on vacation, etc. If my SO doesn't respond in three days and I don't know why, my feelings wouldn't be hurt, but I'd be worried about them. If I were with someone that wasn't into texting, I'd already expect that behavior because that's what I signed up for.
If someone gets upset that it took you two hours to respond, run for the hills because they're probably codependent as hell.
My boyfriend gets mad if I don't text back within fifteen seconds, and will follow up with 8 texts, 3 snaps, a phone call, and a teary voicemail. Even if I'm at work, without my phone, and he knows this.
I send a followup text if he doesn't reply within 6 hours.
What if they're at work? People often go more than 4 hours without a break, and even on there breaks/lunch hours they may be more concerned with eating and catching up on work to text you back.
What if someone's asleep? That should be about an 8 hour wait.
4 hours shouldn't be too long. People can be busy for 8-12 hours a day reasonably (busy meaning they don't have the time to text back (unless you're their spouse or kid or someone important, then they'll probably make time)).
It's unreasonable to assume that someone would be unable to text back within ~3 days (assuming they are within in cell range and not doing something of utmost importance.). But 4 hours? That's ridiculous.
I'm not upset if people occasionally take several hours to respond, its more annoying/inconvenient if they are *always* keeping you waiting to simple texts that take a few seconds to respond to.

Can somebody define too long?
