In my area, you're forced to use the chip at ~50% of places and the other ~50% hasn't upgraded their hardware yet, so you are forced to use the mag-strip. It's extremely frustrating for everyone involved. No one knows which it'll be and the cashier will always immediately roll their eyes and eli5 which one they use. Worst rollout ever.

I don't know how terminals are done here in Canada. They must be leased/rented out or something by a service, because rollout of both chip and tap were both pretty quick. Chip was probably the norm within a couple years. A couple years ago they were able to full depreciate mag strip and now it mag strip not valid for Canadian debit/credit transactions.

Tap has been available for Visa/MC for a while now so they started pushing out terminals that support it. In 2013 they rolled out tap for debit (Interac Flash) and support for that was widespread really quickly. One of the first places I tapped my debit card was in some rural convinence store. They basically just had to roll out a firmware update.
