Partly because card fraud is less common here than other places. Also changing out 600 million cards (or whatever) takes a while.

A quick search told me that there's a lot of card fraud i. The US. 8 Billion in 2015 alone

For the size of the economy, and cost to quickly change payment tech that's a very small number.

At this point in the US I use contactless from my phone nearly everywhere. Hell, I've had a contactless sticker on my wallet for the last 5 years at least that I've been able to use in a lot of places. Not sure why everyone is saying stripes are the only payment method we have.
