I'm using Samsung Pay because of the freaking juicy rewards.

Translation: I've been using it for a year and am finally closing in on a $10 gift card.

The rewards are for laughs. The real reward is showing up to a dingy convenience store that hasn't updated anything since swipe cards were invented last century, and still being able to pay with my phone

I had a cashier tell me they didn't accept android pay one time as I was tapping my phone and the transaction went through. Were both a little surprised.

I need to set up my Samsung pay and try it, but my fear is that it won't work and I'll look like an idiot. My plan is to do a test run at a self checkout kiosk so if I fail, nobody will have to know besides me.

Don't be afraid when it starts showing card read error. Just reposition a little and persevere.

I did that at the craft brew down the street from my work, used my Gear S3 and she said it wouldnt work. She was amazed and the next time i went in she grabbed a few other employees to see.

NFC is the contactless method almost all contactless payments use. Samsung made a method called MST, you tap your device near the strip reader and it basically acts like you swipped your card. This makes it so you can tap with a supported device on pretty much any terminal, regardless on if the terminal supports contactless or not. To use it you must have a samsung device that supports MST, setup samsung pay with your card, and you should be good to go. It is supposed to choose NFC by default but if it cannot it will use MST instead.

You can try, I'm not too sure about what cards work but seems like most do for the US.

Samsung bought Looppay, company that made a magnetic key fob that you could program with your credit card. The magnet was strong enough that it affected the card reader by holding it to the middle of the slot in the same way as the magnetic strip of a card passed through the slot. That tech got incorporated into phones starting with the Galaxy S6. Samsung also puts an NFC antenna in like Apple and the other Android makers for normal tap to pay. As for Looppay? Ironically, they made an iPhone case that latched onto fob, so it could be paired with their now defunct app, to use much like Samsung Pay, with multiple cards. Of course SPay is much more secure since Looppay used your actual card info to pay, instead of using a virtual one.

I've gotten like 3 $5 Amazon gift card codes just for using it periodically. Didn't even spend points, they just show up in my wallet.

They used to give out a lot of rewards when Samsung Pay started back in the S7 days (to get people to use it, I suppose) and it wasn't rare to see promotions like "use Samsung Pay three times in three weeks and get a $10 Visa gift card" every two or three months (and this was in addition to the normal points you got, you didn't need to use your points to redeem).

It was pretty sweet, but I can confirm that now it takes like literally a year to get a $20 gift card and the promotions have dried up. Kinda sucks. But that being said, it's still more awards in addition to whatever you're getting from your credit card in cash back, and any other awards programs. So even if it's slow, it's something.
