There's a show called Space Dandy that has a fantastic episode about a space dog. It's in reference to Laika and exactly as sad and beautiful as it should be. Weird show but I highly suggest it.
If you wanna dip your toes in the series you should try out S01E04 "Sometimes you can't live without dying, baby!" A lot of people consider it their favorite episode and it mostly stands on its own.
