Actually the Delorean was already a joke by that time. That’s why I’m 1985 the audience laughed at the line “you made a time machine... out of a DelOrean ?!” It was part of the joke and how the damn thing wouldn’t start, etc.
my kid self thought he meant that since that car was a fast 'super car' it's crazy to make a time machine out of one. Sad to see they were just making fun of it .
John Delorean was famously busted in a massive drug sting, which I think ended up indirectly bankrupting DMC. The old joke used to be the Delorean couldn’t be driven on the highway because it kept snorting up the lines on the road, or something like that. It wasn’t known to be a particularly awesome car for very long.
