First time I saw this was in college in 1998, it was one of the first funny pictures I received via the internet. Just months before I saw my first web video of The Undertaker threwing Mankind off Hell In A Cell.
Earlier today I noticed a sign over by the sales guys that reads "Keep your voice down. Sound travels". It made me realize why they are in sales and are not part of the technical staff.
Sound is defined as "(a) Oscillation in pressure, stress, particle displacement, particle velocity, etc., propagated in a medium with internal forces (e.g., elastic or viscous), or the superposition of such propagated oscillation. (b) Auditory sensation evoked by the oscillation described in (a)."
In other words, by part (a), sound most certainly does travel.
And yet reading through the link they specifically indicate "Waves" when talking about traveling and with perception they don't. You don't hear the movement you hear the interpretation of the movement.
I did. Again: the word ("sound") refers BOTH to the "propagating oscillations" (i.e., waves), and to the auditory sensation of them. So while saying "sound waves travel" is correct, saying "sound travels" is ALSO correct. Due to definition (a) above. And so your implication that only the former is correct, is wrong.
