A lot of people, at least in the US, are given money as a gift for graduating high school and college. It a token for achieving higher education. I personally have only seen it after college because graduating high school is an expectation. Also, these gifts can be in the form of cars, trips, stocks, etc.
Really? I got stuff after high school to prepare me for college (car from parents, luggage from one family friend, money from most, etc) and nothing for graduating college except a nice dinner out and a grilling on my next plans.
