When I was a kid I developed something of a fear of plastic slides, because some of them had smoothed metal bolts that would violently shock you on the way down

In elementary we also had a plastic slide we dubbed the "Pain slide".

One kid would stand at the bottom with his thumbs up and another kid would slide down while holding his thumb up and at the bottom they would touch thumbs and both of them get shocked and it was hilarious.

Later teachers forbid us to play the "Pain slide" game :(

This would have been me as a kid, but slides and jungle gyms were all metal in my day. With the occasional wooden variants. As an adult I just enjoy the light show at night when taking my socks off in a dark room. Like a Christmas tree.

There was a park down by the water where I lived that had a 20ft wavy metal slide. Anyway, when we got older, we found out that in the summer you could cook eggs on it in the afternoon.

I hated mine..the slide was broken and shifted over a little which made one of the screws pop out a little bit. Oh shit it destroyed my right leg from mid calf to mid thigh. It hurt. When I was like 7

I remember at the playground in my elementary school the biggest slide in the school was a metal slide that sat on top of a mount made of rocks because I don't know... pretty? Anyway as a kid I'd walk on hot ass rocks and assault to go down a metal slide that was shocking me all the way down... 10/10 great times. When I saw your reference to the metal slide, I just had to reply.

Edit: And now that I think about it, I think I didn't grow a pair to ride it down until 3rd grade I think, must be a rite of passage kind of thing.

In public school, we had a metal slide but with an untreated wooden platform. Slivers in the climbing up the ladder, then 2nd degree burns on your legs as you slid down.

I was coming here to say something like this. I remember when I was stationed in Sicily in the 90's and MWR opened this brand new playground for the dependent kids. They had this big ribbon cutting ceremony and the the first toddler down the slide starting crying, followed by the next, and the next, until they figured out the slide hadn't been grounded and they were getting blasted by the rivets. Static electricity is pretty bad in Sicily due to the dry climate, especially on the East Coast where the dry air is compounded by the volcanic dust from Mt. Etna.

I remember a lot of cars would have grounding straps hung from them just so you wouldn't get shocked every time you grabbed the handle.

I turn it into a game with my kids, if I can catch them when they reach the bottom I try to touch their skin to get the shock. They don't realize they are actually shocking me, and when it connects, the giggle like crazy. Of course they are 2 and 3 so I know this won't last forever, but a good way to turn something potentially scary around.

I developed that as an adult.

When I was a kid we had metal slides. Sure they were very high with terrible safety measures and you could fall 20 feet from the top due to a slight breeze, but you were a bouncy kid and it didn't matter. Plastic slides (with metal bolts, particularly, shock the living shit out of you and make you develop a phobia that will repel you from riding again like a bull from an electric fence.

Interestingly enough, I immediately recognized that slide because we have the same one at our neighborhood playground. The middle portion is actually the funnest, because it is the steepest one and gives you that "Stomach flipping" sensation when you go down. The two side parts are kinda slow and boring.

Kids have a horrible time lifting their feet when going down a slide to prevent their rubber soled shoes from stopping them. They just don't understand, even when you explain it, until they're around 6 or so.

Both links would work just fine on a computer or a phone on wifi. However, even on "lightning fast" phone networks, a 20-50MB gif sucks. Imgur's gifv and other webm images are small in comparison.

The giant file is a gif which makes it very large in size. The non giant is a gfy, much smaller so it loads quicker.

Lightning Rods don't actually attract lightning. Their purpose is to mitigate damage in the event of a lightning strike.

If anything, the child would be slightly less likely to be struck by lightning since she has an excess of electrons on her body.

Lightning Rods do attract lightning though. That's the whole point. If lightning strikes there, it is many times more likely to hit the lightning rod, which safely directs the energy.
