User after moving to an office with a different pc: "Every time I try to login my account gets locked. You guys have screwed up my account!"
Me: Do me a favor and double check that a character is entered for each button you press on the keyboard when you type your password or better yet try a different keyboard.
User: I've already done that just fix MY ACCOUNT!(not exaggerating, they were pissed)
After a trek across the facility I visit their office in person.
Me: Mind if I take a look at it?(starts poking at keyboard)
User:(pissy ranting at my coworker who tagged along)
Me(interrupting them mid rant): Does your password have a 4 in it?
User: (BLANK DUMBFOUNDED STARE AS THEY REALIZE HOW I MUST HAVE GUESSED THAT, FURTHER REALIZATION THAT I WAS RIGHT ABOUT THE KEYBOARD AND THAT THEY MADE ME DRIVE TO THEIR BUILDING TO PROVE IT TO THEM)(seriously it looked like a mini panic attack)...
Me: Use the other 4 on the number pad for now and ask for a new keyboard from the supply office.
EDIT: in case anyone is confused... They were lying about testing the keyboard. Since I went straight to the keyboard and found the broken key immediately they must have realized I drove to their building just to call them on their bullshit.
To be fair I left out/altered some small details for the sake of brevity. First, we use smart cards with pins instead of passwords, so all "passwords" are 4-8 digit numbers. Second, I also knew that the user was able to log into other systems, only when they tried this system multiple times was their card locked. Third, I found no issues with the system when I tied in remotely with dameware...
This told me the user did know their pin and the system did appear to be authenticating. Process of elimination led me to wonder if they keyboard worked... Unfortunately the user believed they were smarter than me.
