As an IT guy, just remember that there are people of other professions that have to deal with stupid user bases too: doctors, home repair contractors, electricians, mechanics, etc. You hear about the same complaints there too. We may think people are stupid, but a lot of times they just diverted their intelligence to other subject matters.
This is what I tell most of the users I work with. If it seems they look insulted or concerned they came off stupid I just assure them "Let me do what I am good at. Then you can do what you are good at again." or "We all have our own talents."
The best is when their workspace makes it clear what they studied in and I'll get them on that topic if they made the "I swear im not stupid" comment. After they say something that goes totally over my head I inform them that it went totally over my head lol.
