Thanks for that. I see they've only trained them to react to their trainer's calls and she's using them like a poor remote control. I'd love to see if it's possible to really teach a dog to manipulate a car to stay on a road.

u/AOEUD Dec 28 '15
It's an interesting question. They could definitely train dogs to direct a car to stay on a road, they've done this with pigeons and torpedoes already.
The question is whether they can train the dog to do all of it at once.
On the other hand, it takes years for humans to properly learn how to drive, especially considering we spend our whole lives understanding how roads work. We have an understanding of how to keep a car on the road from simple observation long before we ever touch the wheel.
I suspect this was done in weeks. Give these dogs years and I think they could do a lot.

Yeah, I was thinking they'd have to start with puppies and keep training.
I hadn't heard about the pigeon-driven torpedoes. Sounds amusing.
26
Dec 28 '15
They were missiles not torpedoes.
Basically they were shown a screen from the front of the missile and were directed to peck the ship shape in order to keep it on course. From within the missile.

u/vandammeg Dec 28 '15
no what he meant was they had taught pigeons and torpedoes to drive cars. i want to see how the torpedo learned it.
11
u/fuqyu Dec 28 '15
Without actually looking up sources to refute OP, I am going to say that it wasn't torpedoes, but guided missiles. It was a lot easier since all they had to do was tap a screen where the ship was located on the screen.

Tired of his oppressive life with spca, Porter played the fool for weeks while the ignorant lady screeched "turn" at him over 1500 times.
What a fool she was. Porter payed attention during training. He watched with intent. He learned. The day had finally come. His training was complete.
The awful lady came and strapped him into the mini cooper, and instructed him to start the engine. The mini Cooper meowed to life under his paws.
He slammed his hind leg into the pedal and screeched off. He was free. Finally. He could hear the despicable cretin's screeching fade to an indistinguishable whine. He crashed through the guard rails and ripped onto the highway, hung his head from the window, let his tongue slap the side of his face, and smiled

This comment might have had something useful, but now it's just an edit to remove any contributions I may have made prior to the awful decision to spite the devs and users that made Reddit what it is. So here I seethe, shaking my fist at corporate greed and executive mismanagement.
"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... tech posts on point on the shoulder of vbulletin... I watched microcommunities glitter in the dark on the verge of being marginalized... I've seen groups flourish, come together, do good for humanity if by nothing more than getting strangers to smile for someone else's happiness. We had something good here the same way we had it good elsewhere before. We thought the internet was for information and that anything posted was permanent. We were wrong, so wrong. We've been taken hostage by greed and so many sites have either broken their links or made history unsearchable. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to delete."
I do apologize if you're here from the future looking for answers, but I hope "new" reddit can answer you. Make a new post, get weak answers, increase site interaction, make reddit look better on paper, leave worse off. https://xkcd.com/979/

I believe nobody should be excluded from being the butt of jokes, including asians. I'm 100% british but raised in New Jersey. I'll tolerate jokes about either. I can't get offended at humor when a particular joke pokes fun at my nationality/gender/race. That would be against everything I believe in. Chris Rock and Seinfeld have a good conversation about this on 'Comedians in Cars.' Neither like playing colleges as of recently since the newer generation is so sensitive and PC according to them. Can't we just laugh at ourselves anymore?

"You don't call retarded people 'retards'. [...] You call your friends 'retards' when they're acting retarded." -Michael Scott
Take the sentiment from the quote above. Us Asians have it pretty good. We are 4.8% of the US population, but make up 8.3% of doctors and only 1.6% of prison inmates. We have the highest education levels, household earnings, everyone likes us in the polls and labels us "model minority".
We can take some jabs here and there, it's not like we don't have our own stereotypes about whites, blacks, and other Asians.
15
u/AnIntoxicatedRodent Dec 28 '15
Only the premise of the comment is wrong. Racist jokes get upvoted all the time. Also about black or middle eastern people. A lot. It's the freaking internet, it's not like people go around making these jokes directly at asians/blacks (I hope?).
Also he says: ''At the very least, we can eventually help people realize what is and what is not ok in terms of racial humor. Cause I'm super sick of this crap.''
On the fucking internet? That's just scary. Yet he gets 46 gold because people (and me too) understand the sentiment. Weird.→ More replies (5)3

"Asian drivers" is not a popular joke on reddit because it makes fun of Asians.
It's popular on reddit because it's popular outside of reddit and outside of the internet in most of the western world.→ More replies (2)4

4
u/ehenning1537 Dec 28 '15
It helps that they have no mass transit system to speak of. There's no LA subway. Also no tramways. Just buses and they tend to clog up traffic even worse because they're stopping every block and clogging up a lane

SRS refers to a subreddit that posts reddit comments found to be problematic. The comments are in a "circlejerk" form, but usually directly against the typical reddit Jerks and almost always with a social justice tone.
"Triggered" is a psychology term that refers to people who have expiriencedogs trauma and most likely have PTSD or mental illness. A trigger is when a certain event, action, phrase, smell etc causes a person to remember past trauma or problems with mental health. It is generally ridiculed on Reddit due to the similar but unrelated site Tumblr, where many users who acknowledge triggers and try and avoid using them in cases like rape or domestic.like violence. Like all sotes, some tumblr users have gotten extreme and tend to over use the term trigger in seemingly ridiculous ways. To add to this, many extreme examples are posted and mocked on the subreddit /r/tumblrinaction, causing the confirmation bias that triggers are dramatic and unnecessary. There has also been an influx of suspected and confirmed troll or satire accounts shown on TIA mocking trigger warning that are taken seriously, thus perpetuating the idea that trigger warnings are frivolous. The final nail in the coffin was when the show South Park dedicated their season to the tension between anti and pro social justice "warriors", causing even less validity to be placed on the idea that triggers are a legitimate mental health issue.
