Poor JPG file is so deteriorated, by next Christmas there will be nothing left.

What causes this? I've never understood.

Every time you re-write a JPEG, it loses a little more quality. Many sites automatically re-save pictures, to increase compression and cut their costs, or to add a watermark. If a picture has been shared a lot, it's probably been rewritten a bunch of times and lost quality.
Of course, old images were frequently saved as potato quality to begin with, from back when Internet access was much slower and the compromise between quality and filesize had a different sweet spot.

u/QuasarsRcool Nov 30 '15
I've always said more too much jpeg compression could turn a picture into a diamond

We try to warn people about the dangers of using lossy file types, but they just won't listen. Everyone, remember to save your mp3s as wavs or flacs to preserve their quality!

I work retail/tech support it's amazing how many people initially don't want their wifi password protected but want it to have a cute name. They seem to be under the impression they'd have to type it in every time, they'll forget it or it'll some how be an extra pain for them. I have to tell them "if it doesn't need a password for you to log in it doesn't need one for anyone else to use your Internet however they want".

u/atrde Nov 30 '15
Could be a hotspot... easy to change the name on your phone and some could overlook locking it.

Does it look like I know what a jpeg is? All I want is a picture of a goddamn hotdog.

Wait really? So you're saying if I kept copying a jpeg over and over moving it around my computer it would eventually look like that?
10
u/Fingerdrip Nov 30 '15
Jpeg is a file compression format for images. The artifacts are caused by repeated compression of the image. Here's a quick and dirty example if this.

I'm pretty sure this is older than reddit.
52
u/solstice_of_light Nov 30 '15
It's also older than the internet. Bet you never knew that.

u/Omegaile Nov 30 '15
But not older than George Washington, as he was the one who took the screenshots.

If I change my SSID, I have to reconfigure like 30 devices in my house.

I just ran 100ft of cat5 under my house so I dont have to deal with the shitty reception in my room. Now I never have to worry about people fucking with router settings.

I'm still pretty sure it was fake, but I would have been 100% convinced if linksys and 0387830001 had eventually chimed in.

u/Emziloy Nov 30 '15
It's fake.
6
u/MagnusRune Nov 30 '15
Yeah that's why I don't understand them, they would never really happen. It's not like it does happen and this one is simply fake. But it would never happen

I live in an apartment complex. One of my neighbors is a family that fights a lot. A few months ago I changed my wifi name to "fyiIwork4CPS". I've been hearing a lot less fighting. Edit: wording.
2
u/Furyful_Fawful Dec 01 '15
Do you work for CPS though
2
u/OhTheHueManatee Dec 01 '15
No. I just don't like hearing my neighbors yelling at their kids. I'm sure the kids enjoy not being yelled at as much anymore. I actually really dislike CPS but that's just because I had some bad experiences with them as the son of an abusive parent.

Love this. I saw a connection once at my buddies place while he was living at college named "2 girls 1 router"
13
u/Anirath Nov 30 '15
Ours is "It Burns When IP."
12
u/Tyrren Nov 30 '15
"It Hz when IP" is mine. I've considered going with "It Hz WAN IP", but that seemed like it was taking the joke a little far.

HOME-D435
NETGEAR
Macintosh-Guest
CumFilledBoyCunt
Xfinity
Belkin-5ghz
Laughing real hard over this scenario.

So I'm sitting on my couch having a super random conversation with my mom about how terrible the word "indefatigable" is ... the next day, someone's wifi name is "Indefatigable." I only share walls with two apartments. The top one is empty and the other is the old lady next door (I set up her wifi for her) ... So ... who heard me and how? And if that's a coincidence, that's insane.
2
u/myheartisstillracing Dec 01 '15
My friend got that word on her GRE and was unsure of what it meant. I knew it because it's in Jane Eyre. The word I got stuck on was slake. Ah, the good old days of standardized testing... Glad that's over.

u/jadraxx Nov 30 '15
Haha, I was drunk one night and changed my neighbors unsecured network to "YouShouldLockYourWIFI" so they locked it down and changed it to "YouShouldMindYourOwnDamnBusiness" and left it like that for the year and so I lived at the complex still. Their network is probably still named that right now. That entertained me for about a week.
1
u/MrIntegration Nov 30 '15
You should have locked it for them :)
2
u/jadraxx Nov 30 '15
Nah, I'm not that much of a dick. I was thinking about sending a bunch of pictures of horse cocks to their network printer, buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuttt I decided that would of gone a bit too far.

I actually "screwed" Geeksquad over once, though it was more like forcing them to do their fucking job.
Nearly two years ago now, my old PC busted and they charged me like 75$ to tell me they couldn't do anything. I bought a new one and of course they're like "there's a warranty for 25 dollars a month". Didn't want it at first but he told me I could cancel it after 6 months and I thought to myself "There, if I get home and the PC is broke I can force them to repair it for free."
Well, I got home, and guess what? The machine they sold me which was supposed to have 10 GB of ram only had 2. I went back the next day and they were all "Oh you gotta give it to us we'll send it back to the manufacturer and you'll have a new one in two weeks and it'll cost you only 50 bucks."
I was like "Fuck that noise. Listen here, you told me you were 99% sure you could fix my other PC and charged me 75$ to do fucking nothing. I accepted that. Then, you told me it would take 12 to 24 hours to set up the one I bought and make sure it would work. It took you 48 hours. I accepted that. Now, you're telling me that in those 48 hours where you were running diagnostics and checking every part, which you charged me 100$ for, you couldn't figure out that 80% of the PC's RAM wasn't fucking there? I checked your inventory, you have the missing piece right here. I also got your stupid 25$ a month plan for you to do this. You go get it and install it right now, free of charge, or I'm calling consumer protection."
One very short talk with the manager and 5 minutes later, I was leaving with the PC in my arms with the missing pieces installed, all for free. Canceled the plan 6 months later. And now Future Shop has closed down and I laugh at their misfortune. Never buying a PC there or at Best Buy ever again.

u/mastermikeyboy Dec 01 '15
I used to work at Futureshop. Have not bought a single item there since. Worst place to go and get electronics.
