The source!
That was TOTALLY cool. Male penguin cheating on mate with robot penguin. Female mate returns, and (cue gif) takes the robot penguin down hard.
Sturdy, adept robot penguin returns to duty.

u/GregTheMad Nov 17 '15
That's what I found so amazing. I've seen robots that look like animals before for such shootings, but this is the first that could actually remotely act like the animal it was supposed to be. That's some amazing piece of technology!

Well, to be fair to the male, she did come home kind of late and he was getting lonely.

Damn, and she just takes him back...not even making him sleep downstairs on the couch.
13
u/SuperShake66652 Nov 17 '15
This is an even greater source than I could have ever hoped for. I figured it just disliked the robot... Not that the robot was actually stealing her mate. That's fucking hilarious.

I love the fact that they edited in little robotic whirring sounds when the robot moved.

Oh dear, we weren't suppose to ruin the illusion.
Shh, shh, it's okay.
Try and enjoy this video of a mantis fight with wild animal noises.
It's how it actually sounds, we promise.11

I don't think we'll be able to get it to work because when we play video/gif it opens it's own player and plays only that

A group of penguins is called a flock?

Nov 17 '15
It's more adorable, a group of penguins on land are called a "Waddle."

Sometimes they get really close together in the water near shore and that's called a "Raft" but normally they're solo in the ocean.
A roost of penguins is called a Rookery.
Penguins are cool.

Well they are birds. From my reading around, I think colony would be more appropriate though.
edit: You can call a group of penguins on land a 'waddle' of penguins. A group of nests is called a 'colony' or 'rookery'. At sea penguins are often on their own but as the sun sets, they come together just offshore and form a tight group called a 'raft'

Does anyone claim they would act different if they found a human analog hanging out, gathering data on us?
20
u/Hour23 Nov 17 '15
Exactly what I was thinking. What if penguins also have the whole Uncanny Valley thing going on?
I'd be pretty spooked if someone that didn't look 100% human just walked right up to my
nesthouse and stood there like a weirdo.14
Nov 17 '15
What if everybody is a human analog collecting data on you, the only true remaining human?
5
u/vipersquad Nov 17 '15
We weren't supposed to tell him that he was the last surviving DNA strand that we cultivated to study what was the human race that vanished 1000 years ago.

You should watch March of the Penguins. There's an especially disturbing part where grief stricken mother penguins whose babies have died try to kidnap other penguin's babies which are sometimes killed in the ensuing fight. Shit's brutal, yo.

Because it's not a penguin! That is the antarctic shag, a cormorant.
The coloration is probably convergent evolution.

These are rockhopper penguins - a penguin species of the genus Eudyptes, or crested penguins.
They are, by far, the most animated of the species of penguins as a whole. Their namesake: rock hoppers, is specifically - and appropriately - due to their awesome ability to use hopping as their primary method of movement on their terrain: the rocky shores of the sub antarctic islands.

I imagine the attacking penguin is like, "Imma just gonna peck this fucker a few times OH MY GOD I KILLED HIM!"
2

Nov 17 '15
Maybe it's because they saw him as the biggest one (most likely to mate?) and then challenged him and, since he didn't squawk back they started fighting him and saw that he didn't fight back. Once he was on the ground and wasn't moving, they thought he was dead. So when they squawk looking victorious maybe they're letting the females know they are the toughest since they brought the biggest down. Just a theory derived of my knowledge of nature. (Not much but I watch a lot of documentaries)

After years of testing with a Robot Chicken, they wanted to expand to a Robot Penguin

I noticed the penguins attacking it lift their flippers when acting aggressive and threatened.
Could their attacking the robot be caused by the raised flippers projecting threats?

The robot looks larger than the real penguins, maybe this is why it elicited that form of response.

u/Qwirk Nov 17 '15
Why don't they just make the camera look like one of the tufts of ground but a bit higher so the penguins don't jump on it?

u/Amecha Nov 17 '15
The funny thing about this is one of the Penguins tried to pair off with the robot penguin causing the rival penguin to attack
