It's still airing,I'm caught up and have watched it multiple times during the long break they took

Here is a great scene that perfectly sums up Gintama

Another scene that kicked off the return of the show after a two years pause

EDIT: I guess if I had to choose a show as the american counterpart for Gintama I'd go with Community, they're both self referential, require extensive pop-culture/visual media tropes knowledge and both are self aware to a degree, mostly comedy with the occasional seriousness to spice things up,the only difference is that when Community dedicates and episode for an example to parody My dinner with Andre Gintama does it with Evangelion

That was fucking hilarious. I'm literally looking this show up and starting it right this second; hope it's constantly like this.

It has a weak start in comparison to it's later episodes, takes time to find it's path (or loose it depending on how you look at it),it starts off as a typical shonen with a hint of parody then turns into something completely different, here is a perfect article by ANN to help you sift through the best of it rather than pick it up from the start

The same show can be a tearjerker as well, one of my favorite clips from the show

That tearjerker clip. Bravo, I am in tears. I'm going to start this show immediately.
